About Rakesh

Rakesh’s exploration into photography began with a trip to the Grand Canyon. The grandeur of the place inspired him to capture and share his experiences. Such grand places required a grand vision, so Rakesh began working with large format film cameras, which he continues to favor for his fine art stills.

His love of travel and adventure have lead Rakesh to visit exotic and varied places, from cities such as Kiev and Ronda to wild places like the Serengeti, the Alaskan tundra, the Pampas of Patagonia, and even to lofty heights such as the summits of Mounts Kilimanjaro and Rainier. Lately, in spite of continuing to make captivating still images with film and digital cameras, Rakesh has been applying his photographic skills to motion pictures. While still striving to convey a story with each individual frame, he longer has the limitation of being bound to a single frame to tell the story.

I have had my photography included in several fine art galleries and juried art shows, including a print exhibition at the Louvre. Several of the short films that I have shot have won awards in local film festivals. I have nearly ten years of experience teaching a traditional Okinawan style of karate as well, so though I'm new to teaching film production, I am used to the demands of teaching.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Film

I have been a director of photography for over a dozen short films and one feature-length film. I have worked in a variety of other crew capacities as well, including sound recording and lighting.

My approach to teaching is to get students into hands on work as much as possible, giving them guidance instead of simple answers. Since filmmaking is an art, there are many correct answers to most questions, so I am seeking to encourage students to develop their creativity instead of to imitate my work or someone else's.

Video Production

I have filmed and edited several interviews and promotional films, plus a few ads. Some of these have included green-screen compositing and lighting. I have experience with the entire workflow from production through finishing.

My approach to teaching video production is to help students with the technical questions, and encourage them to find their own voice when it comes to creative questions, with a combination of ideas and criqitues.
