About Robert

Hi, my name is Bob. I have worked as a math and computing tutor for several years. In fact, I began my tutoring in college, and I have taught courses as part of my jobs in many companies. I really love teaching and working with students one-on-one.

A good tutor can guide a student in the right direction and save the student hours of frustration and searching online. I specialize in elementary math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and SAT and ACT Math, and in computing topics including Web Design, C, C++, Java, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

I explain concepts in everyday language, but I also include the necessary mathematical terminology. My first, and most important, objective is to ensure that students are able to work problems and apply reasoning skills on their own, to find solutions. It is very important to me that my students do well on homework and exams.

I approach mathematics with applications in mind. I have a B.S. in physics from CalTech, and a Ph.D. In Informatics from UCSF. I have worked in medicine, pharmacology, aerospace, healthcare computing, 3D visualization, and analysis.I have worked with students enrolled in a variety of programs including nursing, informatics, engineering, business, and finance. I have also worked with many high school students over the years. I hope soon to work with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra I - I have tutored all levels of Algebra for several years, as well as more advanced high school and college level mathematics. I work to carefully establish where a student is and where we want to go. We then work with symbolic and word problems to reinforce concepts and practice so that each student gains confidence and can succeed when on their own.

Algebra 2

I am currently tutoring another student for the Algebra 2 ACT Compass exam. We are working on functions, and composition, and absolute value, and quadratics. I can help with all of that and much more. I have a degree in Physics, and I have used math in my work on 3D visualization for many years.

I have tutored math at all levels for high school and college for a few years in Bainbridge. I really enjoy one-on-one work focused on the needs for a single student.

Computer Programming

I have done professional programming since 1968 when I worked for a time-sharing company in Century City developing a translation system for Fortran into PL1. I have worked in C, C++, Perl, Java, Javascript and occasionally in machine language. I have taught programming to my own employees over the years. I also designed, developed, and taught programming at the University of Washington.

Computer Science

I have a PhD in medical informatics from UCSF (1985). That is essentially a computer science degree. I have taken courses in algorithms, logic, circuits, programming (many many). I have worked as a computer science professional since 1968 starting in high school. I was the CTO/CIO of a drug company in France after my 11 years at Boeing in the Advanced Technology, Computer Science group.

CSS

I develop web sites using HTML and CSS as well as JavaScript. I have used CSS extensively to control appearance and transitions and layout in static and active web-pages. I have tutored others to extend these apps.

HTML

I have taught HTML to children and adults for several years. I use HTML to drive it in my professional work. My approach is to use sample projects to reinforce concepts that apply to a student's own projects. We also work on assignments for bootcamps and other class work and test prep. HTML itself has many web-based resources which I use to enhance the learning.

Java

I have tutored for several years in math and computer science. I have used C, C++, Java, JavaScript and Perl in my work for many applications. I currently use Java to support a large data centric web service.

JavaScript

I develop software in Javascript at this time using jQuery, SAPUI5, and other libraries. The JS code is used for user interfaces on multiple devices. I use Eclipse and other IDE's - so - I have a wide experience with JS for multiple applications. I have worked as a computer professional for over 30 years.

JQuery

For almost 10 years, I have used jQuery as part of my Javascript development environment to provide access to and control of DOM elements. I trained my colleagues on it in the 90s at SAP. It is now a standard part of the SAP UI5 environment, and is very useful for event logic, HTML modification, and CSS changes on the fly using JavaScript. I frequently teach my colleagues about the powerful features of jQuery to improve their code.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Excel since it was invented. In my work we have used it and trained for it for modeling accounts as well as for analytic visualization tied to built-in and external products. I have years of experience with basic excel as well as advanced functions and charting. This is part of my portfolio with all Microsoft Office components.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook for over 25 years. I have taught my employees to use it for managing not only mail but contacts and calendars and to integrate with the other programs in MSFT Office. I tutor not only Outlook but all the Office products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used Powerpoint even before it was incorporated into Office. In my work we have used it and trained for it for sophisticated presentations lasting 5 min or even 20+ hours. This is part of my portfolio with all Microsoft Office components.

Microsoft Word

I have used Word and similar products for over 20 years. In my work we have used it and trained for it for standard template documents as well as for analytic visualization collaborations. I have years of experience with basic Word as well as advanced templates. This is part of my portfolio with all Microsoft Office components.

Perl

I created a 12-week course for Perl at University of Washington and taught it for two years in the 90s. I use Perl every day in my work.

SAT Math

I scored at the top on SAT Math years ago. I currently tutor all high school and college level math classes. We use an approach that builds on strengths and reinforces the concepts necessary for success on the Math test as currently delivered.

SQL

I have used SQL since it was invented in the 70s. I have trained others to use it on Oracle, Microsoft, MySQL and other systems. I work today on Web development. We in part use a SQL backend to support our sites.

Web Design

I have built web sites since the early nineties for my own projects and for others. Some professional sites have been developed as well.. I regularly use Java, Javascript, HTML, and CSS to create active web sites. I have also used Perl to run back-end functionality of Web sites.

I regularly instruct others on how to construct and maintain web sites including dynamic changes supported by client, well as server functionality.

Outstanding, Professional — I was laid off from my job as a graphic designer, I started to look for work and all the job listing mentioned that having HTML and CSS skills were a bonus, so I decided to go back to school and enrolled in a Front End Web Developer class. Not having prior knowledge of these skills, the class being only 10 weeks, and having a learning disability, I knew I needed to find a tutor and fast. I went on ...
