About Haley

I am a Seattle native, born and raised in the area. I currently live in the West Seattle and love the area. I am passionate about working with children. Before I became a teacher, I worked in classrooms around Seattle and as a nanny. I love to cook, be outdoors, read, and explore the Pacific Northwest.

I attended Seattle University for undergrad. While I was an undergrad student, I spent 3 months teaching high school students in Belize City, Belize. After graduating, I moved to Zurich, Switzerland for a year to be an Au Pair to teach two young girls English. I returned to Seattle to get my master's degree. I have a master's degree in Elementary teaching from the University of Washington. After graduating and doing my internship in the Highline School District, I was hired at my student teaching site and have been working there for two years. I started out teaching second grade but have recently moved to fourth grade. I have experience with both primary and intermediate grades. I love teaching all subjects, but math specifically.

I have experience with the University of Washington's, CGI (cognitively guided instruction) theory, I have worked with Math In focus, Engage NY, and have experience modifying/writing my own math unit plans that are CCSS aligned.

I have been trained in Columbia University's Teaching Reading and Writing Project (Reading and Writing Project) for both reading and writing. I have used this curriculum for small group instruction and whole group instruction for both primary and intermediate students. I have experience using different phonics programs (Florida Center for Reading Research and Penn's reading road program).

I have the benefit of being a new teacher so all my training and instruction has been CCSS aligned. My school uses rubrics that push students to self-assess on standards. We do all standards based instruction which has pushed me to grade, intervene, and differentiate to push students to mastery of standards.

I have worked with elementary students in various contexts for the past 10 years. I worked as a classroom assistant, tutor, after school program lead, and teacher. I love teaching students and seeing the joy on their faces when they learn something new.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
