About Joe

Helping others express themselves through writing and speaking is my passion. I've taught writing at Seattle University, U.W. School of Social Work, U.W. School of Communications, and Cornish College of the Arts, and have tutored many private students. I enjoy getting to know people and helping them reach their goals. I'm extremely patient and able to tailor lessons to the individual. I've been a counselor, so I know how to listen to and connect with people one-on-one.

I'm an accomplished professional writer, having won a "Best Book of 2015" award from Kirkus Reviews. My book has been an Elliott Bay Books bestseller and holds a 98% four-and-five star rating on Amazon. I also won 8 Emmy Awards for scriptwriting and producing as head writer for the KING-TV show "Almost Live." I've written journalism and op-ed pieces for the Seattle Times. I've given workshops and public presentations for Four Seasons Hotels in Hawaii, for Swedish Medical Center at the downtown Seattle Sheraton, and at a retreat center in Malibu, California, to name a few. I have also taught English as a Second Language at schools in Seattle and Tacoma.

I graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in English and Journalism, and hold a masters in Psychology (GPA: 4.0), both from Seattle University. My masters program involved much academic reading and writing about psychology, literature and philosophy.

My general availability is 9 a.m to 9 p.m. daily and I can travel to meet students around the Seattle area or online. Feel free to contact me to learn more about how I can tailor a tutoring plan to help you reach your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I love the study of language, literature and poetry and am passionate about teaching and tutoring. I have a B.A. in English and Journalism (Summa Cum Laude), plus an M.A. in Psychology (gpa 4.0), both from Seattle University. Both degrees required many academic papers, and the psychology masters, which is humanistically-oriented, included papers on literature and philosophy. I've taught writing at the university level, having presented writing classes at Seattle U., University of Washington, and Cornish College for the Arts. I've also been a counselor, and like working with students on an individual basis.

Public Speaking

I have been a public speaker for many years and have taught many classes and workshops. I gave a keynote address at the downtown Seattle Sheraton last year as part of a fundraiser for Swedish Hospital. I've been the host for multiple events at Seattle University. I've given classroom presentations for University of Washington School of Social Work, U.W. School of Communications, Seattle University, Shoreline High School, Antioch University. Corporate trainings include Four Seasons Hotels, Hawaii and CTI Bio-Pharma, Seattle. I have a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Psychology, have directed plays, taught improvisation to groups and individuals, and tutored others in writing and speaking. I enjoy helping students hone their speaking and presentation skills.

Writing

I'm an award-winning writer, having written professionally in journalism, memoir, television, and online. I've written many academic papers as an undergraduate and graduate student. I've taught writing at the university level and am a patient, dynamic, committed tutor.
