About Philip

Hello! I am a TESOL Certified ESL Teacher. I love being involved in language learning and I love helping people improve their English. I have found that I can learn a great deal from my students and I admire people with the courage to learn new languages. I am an online ESL Teacher and I have worked with adult ESL students in my local community in classroom, computer lab and one on one settings.

When I have traveled abroad I have always made an attempt to learn some of the local language, to try to communicate with people in their own tongue. It's always a challenge and sometimes it's a struggle but many times it is fun and allows you to create a connection with people you otherwise never would have spoken with.

I have always been interested in languages and learning. I joined Toastmasters to become a better public speaker and to better understand the technique and preparation needed to get my message across well when speaking in front of others. I have enjoyed studying ESL because there is so much to learn! From pronunciation to student motivation to educational theory, you can dive as deep as you want in any given area to improve your skills and effectiveness as a teacher. I am currently taking ESL classes to improve my teaching at Arizona State University where I have already completed coursework towards my TESOL certificate. I also take classes through the British Council for the same purpose.

Don't be shy! I would love to help you with anything you need related to English or Public Speaking. It's always great to see a smile on someone's face when they learn new skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have completed coursework through Arizona State University and the British Council to teach English as a second language. I have experience working with adult learners in classroom settings and computer labs as well as one to one learning. Proofreading and editing are also skills I use to help my students improve their English and critical thinking skills. I like to provide a positive and supportive presence for my students so it is easy for them to succeed.

Proofreading

I have served as the editor of a collegiate scholarly journal, been involved in many writing intensive projects in my professional career and enjoy essay writing. For the past two years I have been proofreading for a client in Seattle.

Public Speaking

I have received specific Public Speaking training and I have several years of professional experience where Public Speaking was required and common for me. First, I spent a year attending Toastmasters meetings to hone my skills and learn specific techniques for preparing and delivering different types of speeches. Second, I participated in my high school debate club where I regularly made speeches in class (during my senior year) and made a major speech to the entire student body and school administrators regarding the school's academic probation program for high school athletes. Third, I have held numerous professional positions where I hold meetings with employees, guests, vendors and others on a range of topics which have included sales, training, and community involvement. My professional experience amounts to approximately 7 years of public speaking experiences. I have made presentations to local governments, mayors, city councils and professional groups. Fourth, as a community volunteer I have addresses the public at community meetings for Land Use & Zoning, Tourism Development and Funding, and community signage regulations. My public speaking experience as a community volunteer equals 4 years of meetings and events and is the core of my public speaking experience. Lastly, I am the type of person that watches TEDTalks and critiques the speakers' use of rhythm, body language, word choice, structure and pauses because I really enjoy the process of public speaking.
