About Andy

My name is Andy and I am a full-time academic coach. I moved to Seattle from the UK in the summer, and I absolutely love the place! I have been an academic coach for five years now, and I have recently had a textbook published in the UK by a major publisher. I hold a degree in History and Politics from Oxford University, and I did a Master's in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at Edinburgh University. Neither had any practical purpose or intentions, I just enjoy learning in the same way as I am passionate about tutoring!

I am an enthusiastic and outgoing person. I love academic coaching; by far the best aspect is forming a partnership with a student. I specialize in helping students with writing, although I also help them with organization and time management. When I work with a student, I like to be contactable even outside of lesson times. My current students text and email me during the week. This helps them to progress much faster, and cuts down any stress they might have.

In my free time I am active: since moving to Seattle I have completed a half marathon (not too bad) and a Tough Mudder (horrendous). I enjoy reading, and try to alternate between fiction and non-fiction. I enjoy using technology in teaching, and many students respond well to consuming information in a different way.

The facetious answer to why I'm a good English teacher is that I'm English. You can learn straight from the horse's mouth! The more serious answer is that I love literature. I wrote a textbook that is soon to be published in the UK on English exam techniques. I love explaining literature in new ways, and making techniques and literature devices seem more pertinent. To give an example: talking about 'tone' in a text can seem abstract. However, when you analogize it to a soundtrack in a film, it becomes much clearer.

History is my favorite subject. I studied History and Politics at Oxford University and absolutely loved it. I like to use the tutorial system in my teaching, to encourage students to develop the intellectual tools to be great historians. This involves researching a topic and then defending a thesis (I will show you how to do each of these things, don't worry!). My specialties in History lie in American History and British History, particularly since the eighteenth century, although I can also do European and Middle Eastern History.

I have worked closely with students with ADD/ADHD and Dyslexia in the past. I believe fundamentally that good tutoring/coaching is about forming a strong empathetic bond with a student - about getting to know their brain. I don't do 'off the peg' lessons; everything is tailored to a student's individual requirements.

Put simply, if you work with me, you will be confident, happier, and more engaged in your work than ever! If you want an academic coach who will challenge, cajole, and ultimately empower you, then I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks!

Andy

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Political Science

I hold a degree from Oxford University in History and Politics (MA). I hold a Master's in Islamic and Middle Eastern studies, with a focus on Politics and Islam.

I have tutored Politics and International Relations for the past five years.

I have been coaching public speaking for several years, in both the US and the UK. I was also a national-finalist public speaker when at High School (reached the finals of the Oxford University Parliamentary Debating Competition).
