About Joseph Maxwell

I am a very passionate teacher and tutor. I make it my personal goal to see every student that I work with succeed. I am an over-acheiver and I am not afraid to go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that my students make the most out of the time they spend with me.
My goal, as a teacher, is to instill in my students the same passion for the English language that I possess. English is the most successful lingua franca in the world today, and students want to learn it. And when a student is passionate, not about the curriculum or course material per se, but about the language itself, then it becomes not a question of if they can succeed, but of when they will succeed. That is my teaching philosophy, and for the past year that I have been teaching it has also been the motto that I work by.

I am an English Literature and Linguistics major from the University of Washington, and I have obtained my International-Teaching English as a Foreign Language (I-TEFL) Certificate, giving me an edge in English Mechanics: including grammar teaching, reading, writing, and proofreading.
At the University of Washington I studied English Romance and Bible Studies, as well as Science Fiction and Early American Classics.

I really enjoy teaching these and many more subjects! I am always open to teach any subject related to the field, because one of my favorite parts about teaching and tutoring is learning right along side my students. So please contact me with any and all questions, and let's get started!
In the World of the English Language, there is always something amazing to find.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

Firstly, I am from a household of avid Bible readers: as a child, we read and analyzed a score of stories. In college, I took several "Bible as Literature" classes, where we analyzed both the major books, as well as the lesser known stories in the Apocrypha. Additionally, most novels in the English canon use motifs and imagery from the Bible, so studying the Bible, in turn, can help in understanding the complexities of the novel. When teaching the Bible, it is important to tackle the stories from a historical standpoint, as well as a critical one; oftentimes, the stories in the bible are written based on Hebrew or Greek poetry and prose, which I have also studied in order to solidify my understanding of the Bible.

English

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and a Bachelor's Degree in Linguistics from the University of Washington, earned in 2015. I have 120-hour International-Teaching English as a Foreign Language Certificate from the University of Washington, which I received in 2014.

Public Speaking

I am an English Teacher and Conversation Facilitator at the University of Washington: in this field, public speaking is the most important aspect. In college, I took many Communications classes, where I studied the important points of public speaking: including, eye contact, voice projection, leading the class, Question and Answer (Q&A) sessions, and most importantly, the actual writing of the speech. When teaching public speaking, practice is the most important aspect. Oftentimes, there is a barrier keeping the student from succeeding, my job is to help the student to overcome this barrier so that they can speak with ease.
