About Maximilian

My passion for teaching languages is grounded in the fact that second-language learning is transformational. In fact, research has shown that multilingual individuals live longer, have greater academic success, and show more tolerance and acceptance towards other cultures and lifestyles. Through three years of teaching English and Spanish, a degree in linguistics, and a certificate in TESOL (ongoing), I have adopted the communicative approach to language teaching because I strongly believe that using a language is the best way to learn it. Thus, I dedicate at least 75% of student contact hours to activities in which students use their target language in authentic situations. The additional 25% of contact hours are dedicated to high-quality, explicit instruction in a combination of pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, listening, and reading and writing, depending on my student’s needs and interests.

For communicative activities, I use a combination of information gap exercises, impromptu skits, speaking challenges, and games. I always strive to keep the difficulty level of these activities slightly more challenging than the level that is commensurate with my student’s current capabilities. However, I also spend time helping my students analyze particular structures and features of their target language. For example, to help my students improve their vocabulary, I take advantage of corpus linguistics to create high-frequency word lists. I also help my students master these words by teaching them to use spaced-repetition software, such as Quizlet and Anki. By helping students identify common words that they do not know, that is, their “low-hanging fruit”, I help them learn the most important vocabulary for their particular purpose.

Over the years, I have developed a dynamic teaching technique. I use visual and kinesthetic tools to improve my student’s pronunciation, offer practical tips and suggestions for articulating and perceiving difficult sounds, and explain grammar using a phrase-based metalanguage.

I have 3 years of experience teaching ESL to adult learners. I have a Bachelor's degree in linguistics with honors from the University of Washington. I am currently becoming certified in TESOL through ASU.

I have lived in Mexico and Spain for a combined total of 3 years. I have a proficiency certificate in Spanish as a foreign language (DELE C1). I have conducted research on Spanish.

Whether you want to work on pronunciation, vocabulary, or just study for the TOEFL, feel free to contact me so we can talk about your particular goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
