Special Needs

Hard of Hearing

Hard of Hearing

I have been using sign language since I was 9 years old. I began studying for my own information, then a deaf kid moved into my neighborhood and we became friends- initiated because I could "speak" her language. Later, at age 12, I became a babysitter for another deaf kid, and since I was the only person outside of his family that could communicate with him so I was his interpreter. I studied Deaf Education and Sign Language (ASL and SEE) in university. As a middle school teacher, I was the only staff member in my school able to sign, so the only deaf kid in the school was placed in my classroom. Eventually the school hired an interpreter for the student, but the student and her family insisted that I was better than the school's interpreter! Years later, I had a son who was born deaf. I started taking sign language classes as a refresher, but I tested into interpreter-level on the first day. Not much to refresh! Thank you for your consideration.
