About Maggie

Hi there! I'm Maggie, and I can help you with Math, Writing, Spanish, ACT/SAT Prep, Homework Organization, Time Management, Executive Function issues, and other Learning Disabilities.

My 9+ years working in Education are detailed in my resume below.

PHILOSOPHY
I provide students with an instructional environment that fosters collaboration, confidence, and motivation. Effective tutoring goes beyond homework help - it requires tailored practice problems and learning activities that supplement work required by the student's teacher.

SUMMARY
Over the last nine years, I have tutored students in Buenos Aires, New York City, and Seattle. I was a Math and Special Education teacher in the New York City public school system for six years. During this tenure, I planned and implemented interventions for middle and high school students with autism, and I was nominated Lead Teacher in my school district. In Seattle, I worked at a private school teaching Math, Language Arts, and Social Studies to middle and high school students with autism, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, executive function disorders, and other learning disabilities. I wrote educator resources on strategies for working with students with disabilities, and I developed a program for building executive functioning skills which was used school-wide. Currently, I also work as a curriculum consultant and tutor for home school students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Math is my strongest subject. In addition to obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Math from one of the top colleges in the country, I taught 9th grade Algebra in NYC public schools, and I've tutored students in Algebra for almost 8 years.

Algebra 2

My skills in Math are outstanding. I majored in Mathematics and Statistics as an undergrad and following college I taught Math to high school students. Currently, I tutor high school students and adults in all levels of Math, PreAlgebra and up.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have a New York State Professional Teaching Certificate for Children with Disabilities. I have cared for students with autism for over 14 years. I was a lead teacher for a class of autistic students for over 5 years. I am also formally trained in ABA and TEACCH, two methods for instructing students with autism.

Prealgebra

My Math skills are outstanding. Not only did I obtain a degree in Math from one of the top colleges in the country, but I also have experience teaching Math as a classroom teacher. I understand how to demonstrate the important concepts to learners and how to provide appropriate and individualized support as needed.

Special Needs

I have a Masters of Science for Teaching in Childhood Education with an emphasis on Students with Disabilities, as well as a New York State Professional Teaching Certificate for Children with Disabilities.
For over 5 years, I've worked as a classroom teacher for students with special needs, and I have also received formal training from the NYC Department of Education. The training included specific methods for adapting instructional content to meet the individualized needs of differently-abled students.
