About Michael

Hello!

My name is Michael (Mikey) and I just graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Journalism with a focus in Strategic Communication and a minor in English. For two and a half years I worked at KU's Writing Center tutoring undergraduate students, international students and even Ph.D. students. While it's possible to improve a piece of writing in one session, our mission and goal was to help writers improve over time.

Any kind of writing--especially academic writing--can be scary. When trying to come up with a cohesive argument or to lay down a train of thought, it helps immensely to have another pair of eyes there to tell you that "no, you aren't crazy. That does make sense!" I love to tutor because I love to write and love to read. Not everyone has the same love that I do, and I've found that through my abilities as a tutor I can help others to enjoy--or at least not HATE writing. I'm more than a proofreader, I can help at any stage of the writing process. From brainstorming a topic to organization to finding research and checking citations, I'm here to lend a helping hand.

As a Journalism major and English minor, I've done a lot of academic and journalistic writing. Furthermore, being a professional tutor at a public university means that I've had to hone and perfect my skills in order to be an authority and a resource for other students.

I'm very available and willing to meet just about anywhere! I've been described as fun, helpful, friendly. Find out for yourself!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

With a Bachelor's in Journalism and a minor in English, I have a strong background in academic writing. Literature and English have always been a natural strong-suit for me and I have had much success in the past when tutoring in these subjects.

Proofreading

At the University of Kansas' Writing Center I was the Lead Undergraduate Consultant. A majority of our clients were non-native English speakers and proofreading was critical as Word cannot catch all errors. I'm great at catching all Theirs/there/they're, your/you're and in simple typos.
