About James

Many (too many if you ask me) years ago, I was in the same position as a lot of you - struggling to understand a lot of concepts, preparing around the clock to complete these awful standardized tests, and above all wondering where my future would take me. Eventually a lot of my hard work, as does all hard work, paid off: I ended up attending MIT from 2010-2015 (taking a one year break to do research at Brookhaven National Laboratory) and have just recently earned my B.S. in Physics. My research passion is plasma physics and nuclear fusion and I plan on continuing my studies at University of Washington this fall where I will earn my PhD research new nuclear fusion technologies.

I have taught classes for middle school and high school students through programs at MIT for years, in subjects as diverse as interstellar space travel and the composition of rock operas. I've informally tutored on AP subjects and SAT test prep and have helped my little brothers and sisters (6 of them!) with their homework more times than I could count. I love watching students learn and as corny as it might sound I love transmitting new information. My own experience in dealing with math, science, and test prep has taught me many valuable techniques that I wish to pass down so my students can work smarter, not harder. In my spare time, I like to write science fiction, powerlift, practice my jiu jitsu, and teach pit bulls how to slackline (for real). If you want serious prep, come to me.

I've taken half a dozen math classes in my time at school (enough to technically minor but I never filled out the paperwork) and use math extensively in my physics classes, allowing me to practice math day after day. I've taken the SAT and math II SAT II and have a variety of tips and tricks to not only answer questions quickly but understand them.

I majored in physics and have always had a deep, passionate understanding of the subject. I took honors physics and the Regents exam in physics in high school and have tutored for the AP Physics B and C exams, which means I know what you can expect and what you need to prepare for in courses and on the tests.

I scored a 780/800 on my reading portion of the SAT, only 3 questions from perfection. I attribute this to various mnemonics I've developed allowing me to recall the meaning of words.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

My qualifications and experience in biology include receiving a perfect score of 800 on the Biology SAT II, a 5 on the AP Biology exam, and a course in introductory genetic biology at MI.

Calculus

I've gotten a 5 on the calculus AB exam and an A in both single and multivariable calculus.

Chemistry

Wyzant qualified in Chemistry. In high school my AP Chemistry score was a 5 and I scored 790/800 on the chemistry SAT II. Took solid state and thermal chemistry at MIT

SAT Math

I have been certified by the Wyzant system as qualified to tutor SAT math and my first time score on the SAT Math section was 740.

SAT Reading

I have scored a 780 on the SAT reading section.
