About Sharon

I returned to college after my children were grown. I am a "young" mature woman, and I understand the challenges that come with learning new skills. A good challenge is one of the things that make life exciting, and that goes double for the challenge of learning something new. Though I didn't return to the classroom until I was a bit older, I have nevertheless been a life-long student. Painting, writing and acting have been my life's passion and teaching is the best way for me to extend my own exploration. I enjoy being a tutor because it provides a source of income and enables me to explore the subjects that I love.

I discovered my love for teaching at Shoreline Community College, where I am an English 101 and 102 tutor. One of the things that makes me an excellent tutor is the fact that I listen to my students. I spend time in the areas where they feel they need help. One of the best compliments that I recently received was from an International student, who said, "You are the best tutor I've ever had, because I don't feel stupid when I talk to you. I used to get C's in English and now I am getting an A." People thrive when they feel confident. As a tutor, helping to build confidence in my students is one of my goals.

I have been a fine art painter for over twenty years. Painting is my passion and I always welcome an opportunity to work with people who want to explore the possibilities of transferring their own creativity to canvas. I specialize in acrylic painting and color composition. It is my sincere belief that everyone has an artist inside. I have painting techniques to help build confidence and find the joy in painting.

I am currently finishing my Film Production degree and have been honing my acting, writing and directing skills for the past four years.

If you would like to work with a flexible, open minded instructor, who encourages creative freedom, please contact me!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
