About Will

Hello, my name is Will R.--I have been living in the Seattle area for 5 years now, having just finished my undergraduate degree in English from the University of Washington--Seattle. I'm originally from the Bay Area in California, growing up around the tech companies of Silicon Valley. Seattle has now become my home, and I have enjoyed exploring the city, meeting new clients and friends, and working with individuals looking to reach their desired goals.

In the past year, I volunteered with AmeriCorps--a national service program that supports educational projects. Working with high school youth, I advocated students seeking their goals in higher education by way of tutoring, resource finding, and experiential learning. This non-profit program, called Making Connections, allows students to see their full potential, and seeing their journey to success has been most rewarding for me.

I have worked at an undergraduate writing center for three years at the University of Washington (UW), and have experience tutoring privately since being a student at UW. I truly enjoy the experience of working one-on-one with students; I love it for the reason that it develops a learning experience that caters to the individual learner, so they can thrive in the most optimal way. For me, it's all about the experience of tutoring, and making good use of the time that is spent to achieve your learning goals.

Guiding you through a variety of writing assignments and other skill-building, I can assist you in reaching the writing and language goals you need. Consider the following questions that may apply to you:

Are you new to the area and want to strengthen your English language proficiency (in writing and/or speaking?)

Do you need assistance working on a college essay or admissions application to 4-year or graduate schools?

Do you require a guide/mentor to work alongside your child as he or she develops the writing/speaking/study skills necessary to succeed at the college-level and beyond?

These are just a few of the areas that I specialize in. I have spent time to specially develop curriculum that caters to these areas of focus. Additionally, I believe it takes commitment and motivation to be a long-term learner, and I present skills that can be utilized right away, as well as methods optimized through long-term tutoring.

Regardless of your needs, I plan to meet them! As the above topics suggest, I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring in K-8 schooling, as well as high school education and curriculum.

If you are serious about improving your desired writing or speaking skills, and need that extra motivation and guide, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am flexible and work around most schedules. I look forward to hearing more about you and finding a way to meet your needs!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have experience teaching international students at the University of Washington the English language. I find that friendships and confidence can be built in those who try their best to seek tutoring and a language partner.

While at the University of Washington, I took specific courses pertaining to ELL (English Language Learners); I find great satisfaction in tutoring this subject to others.

Proofreading

I have been working for an undergraduate/graduate-level writing center at the University of Washington for more than three years. As a writing adviser, I work one-on-one with students to address their written concerns, discussing ideas, hashing out grammar issues, and other technical problems. I do more than simply proofread a paper. My goal is to make sure you understand why and where you are making mistakes, to allow you to develop strategies to help you with your own proofreading skill set.

Excellent tutor; helped tremendously with college essays — Will is an exceptionally great tutor. He helped my high school senior with a couple of essays for her college applications. He was extremely helpful brainstorming and outlining the essays which ultimately elevated the write-ups. His strong and keen feedback was also very much appreciated. Overall, two thumbs up. We would hire Will again. ...
