I love teaching. More specifically, I love being part of someone's discovery that math isn't really a foreign language and that writing doesn't have to be a torturous process. I believe that learning should be fun, and enjoy seeing the satisfaction, confidence, and wonder that comes with understanding and success.

I love teaching. More specifically, I love being part of someone's discovery that math isn't really a foreign language and that writing doesn't have to be a torturous process. I believe that learning should be fun, and enjoy seeing the satisfaction, confidence, and wonder that comes with understanding and success.

As a high school senior, I student taught a sophomore biology class as part of an education course, and assisted with developmentally delayed and ESL courses. At Seattle Central Community College, I was elected by faculty to serve as Lead Tutor for their new Writing Center. When I transferred to Southwestern University, I completed a Teaching of Writing course, and served as the Assistant Director for the Debby Ellis Writing Center, where I was responsible for the orientation and training of new writing center staff. As a Calculus student teacher, I held office hours, graded homework, prepared worksheets, and ran recitations. I also served as a Southwestern University math tutor, and tutored and mentored middle school and high school students (through Operation Achievement and Upward Bound). My passion for learning and communicating about mathematics, literature, and writing earned me departmental awards in both math and English.

I have a lot of experience working with frustrated students, adults returning to school, and English Language Learners. (I was a frustrated student when I first attended college, and then was an adult when I returned.) My goal in a tutoring session is to focus on transferable skills, so that each session not only addresses the assignment at hand but also provides clients with skills, techniques, or tricks they can use in future assignments. For example, we can practice using a reference text or reverse-outlining a paper, so that you leave every session with more tools for independent learning.

I'm happy to do test prep for the following:
SAT: scored 1350 (back when it was out of 1600)
ACT: scored 33
GRE Verbal Reasoning: scored 168 (98th percentile)
GRE Quantitative Reasoning: scored 167 (94th percentile)

Please feel free to email me with any questions. I look forward to creating a personalized lesson plan with you!

Discrete Math

I completed Discrete Math as an undergraduate at Southwestern University (with an A). As a Southwestern math tutor, Discrete Math was one of the subjects that I tutored. Much of the content from Discrete Math was reinforced as I progressed through my math degree (particularly combinatorics, algorithms, set theory, logic, mathematical relations, and graph theory), and I have a wonderful textbook on hand for reference. For many of the Discrete Math topics, I make sure students are comfortable using both mathematical symbols and 'plain English' to describe problems and solutions, privileging understanding over memorization.

We used Heather for both our high school students

We are so grateful to have met Heather through Wyzant. We originally used Heather for our junior who needed to boost her SAT scores and with just a few sessions with Heather, her scores went up 10 points. The scores are important but what I really like is that Heather helped our student become confident with her math and study skills. We then used Heather for our sophomore who in the first week of math came home and said .. "I am already lost". We used Heather as a tutor every week and our sophomore went from being a discouraged math student to someone who felt empowered and smart. Heather was so great, she made the best use of the time and asked that our student come prepared, which she did, with her current work and questions. Our student really enjoyed Heather as a person and she went above and beyond what any tutor would do in explaining to us how we could the best help our student. I just wish Heather was our math teacher but we will plan to use her next year for math and for SAT prep as well.

Excellent Tutor!

Heather has a way of explaining calculus that makes the subject easy to understand. She has also taken a 10 page paper assignment and broken it into more manageable pieces. Her knowledge, approachable teaching style, and encouragement have been an excellent fit for our son. I highly recommend her!

Excellent tutor

Heather had been tutoring our son in math for the past couple of years. She is great at figuring out things he may have missed in class, and helps him talk through concepts in order to improve his comprehension. Heather is patient, and has a fantastic attitude. I highly recommend Heather as a tutor.

Algebra 1 success

My 8th grader just finished up Algebra 1 with an ‘A’. This never would have been possible without Heather’s help. She is patient, explains things clearly, and is very good at math (of course!) This was a perfect match for my daughter who has struggled with math for years and gets frustrated easily. We look forward to conquering geometry with Heather’s help next school year!

Best Algebra 2 Tutor

I am very grateful that I had Heather as my math tutor. I was looking for a tutor so I could pass an Algebra 2 test in order for me to graduate from high school. She helped me pass my math test in a few weeks. She’s patient and knowledgeable. I have seen a few other tutors and by far Heather was the best. She is able to see you for larger chunks of time, I have found that it is difficult to find a tutor that can see you for more than one hour. She also replies quickly and provides outside resources for extra practice. I highly recommend her as a tutor if you are struggling with math. Thank you Heather!!!

My daughter loves working with Heather!

Heather is working with my daughter on pre-calc which she has been struggling with all year. My daughter loves going to her tutoring sessions - she has fun and she learns a lot! In less than a month, her grade went from a C- to a B-. We are so thrilled!

Gifted and passionate teacher

Heather is a natural-born teacher. My mom had a stroke that left her unable to speak. I hired a speech pathologist but wanted to supplement this with another couple of English teachers to give my mom more practice and a mixture of approaches. When I asked Heather to do this, I knew this would be out of her regular scope, but she approached the challenge with great enthusiasm, empathy and lots of great ideas. She quickly adapted, was very analytical about what materials and practices would help most, and positively contributed to my mom’s speech improvement. She also, very thoughtfully, sent me summaries of the lessons with updates of my mom’s progress. Not only was Heather effective, my mom (who can be a little feisty), eagerly looked forward to her lessons. I highly recommend her for any teaching position.

Heather went out of her way to make this tutoring session workout

We are very fortunate to have Heather as our tutor for pre calculus. Yesterday she went above and beyond in scheduling a tutoring session a day before the final exam. Her knowledge and ability to impart these concepts is invaluable and we highly recommend her for any tutoring needs.
