About Brenda

Hello! I have taught English in China, and have years of tutoring experience in English, Reading, and Writing with children and adults. I have worked in the San Diego and Seattle school systems as well as volunteered for The International Rescue Committee in tutoring refugee women from Somalia.

I grew up in a bilingual household (my parents spoke in Mandarin Chinese to me and vice versa), and later learned German in college through courses and by living in Germany for a year. Having had experience learning foreign languages, I feel that I have personal experience with how to best learn to communicate in both academic and informal/conversational settings.

I look forward to working with you and helping you meet your goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored elementary students in reading and writing in the Los Angeles and San Diego School Districts for 5 years aged 10-15 years old. I've been an independent tutor in various subjects (science, history, reading, and writing) for the last year in Seattle, WA for middle school students. I have also taught English in China to two classes of 25 students each, aged 10-14.

For one-on-one tutoring, I like to start with assessing the students' ability and motivation level by having them demonstrate their reading/writing ability and how they organize their homework. My goal is to teach students how to learn and seek out information, so that they can work independently eventually. I test comprehension by asking them questions about the work that they're doing every step of the way. I also try to relate the subjects to their daily life and things that they are interested in.
