Tufts University (Anthropology)
I specialize in standardized test prep and empowering families through the school/college application process. I work with students at my location in North Greenlake.
My fall 2016 schedule is mostly full.
In addition to tutoring, I create test prep materials. I am a co-founder of Test Innovators which offers online diagnostics for the ISEE and SSAT, and have headed the creation of 18 full-length ISEE practice tests and 18 full-length SSAT practice tests. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Tufts University (GPA 3. 8). and though I spent 8 years on the East Coast and a year teaching in Japan, I grew up in Seattle and am an alum of The Northwest School, The Evergreen School, and Spruce Street School.
With over 10 yrs teaching experience and 8 yrs teaching and tutoring, I have been engaged in many aspects of education, curriculum development, and test preparation. I have been writing test prep textbooks and exams (SAT, ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, HSPT, ELA) since 2008 and taught ISEE and SAT Test Prep with The Northwest School. I have worked with students, old and young, of diverse racial, cultural, national, socioeconomic, and learning backgrounds (students with various learning differences including ADD, ADHD, dysgraphia, etc.).
For standardized test prep, I most often coach students for 1 or 2 hours, once a week, for at least 2-3 months before their exam (sometimes as long as 6 months or a year). I can also meet with students for just a few sessions before a test to build confidence and establish familiarity with timed sections. Spring and early summer are good times to contact me for fall ISEE and SSAT tutoring as my schedule becomes full.
I am highly recommended to students and their families by The Northwest School, SAAS, Giddens School, The Valley School, and Seattle-based educational consultant, Roger Cibella. Nora went over test taking strategies and math tips with my daughter today. Yes we both feel this was very helpful & we will book more seasons with Nora.
The fact that my son is happy and engaged with what Nora is teaching him is a win/win.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I managed the writing of 2 full-length HSPT practice tests.
I have been tutoring all levels ISEE since 2010. I have written (/managed the writing of) 18 full-length ISEE practice tests, level appropriate vocab lists, additional essay prompts, and test prep advice. For the years that it was offered, I was the ISEE Prep instructor for The Northwest School Summer Camp.
I have been teaching and tutoring for over 10 years. I often work with students to help them learn more effective study and organizational skills. I am located close to The Northwest School and SAAS and each year these schools recommend my study skill coaching to families seeking support for their children.
I have been a practitioner of hatha yoga for 14 years. I received my 200 hour certification from John Wilson of Eastlake Yoga. I taught the yoga classes offered by The Northwest School in their 2013 summer camp.
