About Janet

I am a linguist by training and speak six languages. I also have an MA in international relations from Georgetown and spent many years in international development both in Washington, DC, Zambia and consulting around the world. I am eager to help internationals moving to Seattle who need help dealing with professional and bureaucratic English as they get settled in the U.S. I am particularly interested in Asian and South Asian cultures and would welcome students from countries in those regions. I myself am always learning a new language and truly enjoy working with words. I also edit, proofread and write professionally. I have been teaching English, international relations theory, diplomatic history and American Society and foreign policy since 1991, mostly in Slovakia, where I lived for 12 years. I've worked mostly with university students and adults. I love working with individuals who are eager to learn, not only the subject matter, but also about themselves. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

Since 2011 I have been training corporate and nonprofit managers in communication skills in Central Europe. Among these skills are public speaking and giving good presentations. Usually I provide a 2-day intensive workshop and have had consistently excellent post-training evaluations. I have worked through agencies (Timan, Mega-Education) and independently with a clientele that includes IBM, ING Bank, O2 (European mobile telephone operator), the Slovak Ministry of Finance and individual nonprofit managers and entrepreneurs.
