Hi there! I'm a first-year student (1L) at the University of Washington School of Law. I studied Public Health at UC Berkeley, and went on to work in public policy and advocacy for 2-years at a statewide policy organization in California. I have a sharp editorial eye, a background in youth development, and can do what most top tier college coaching services do — for a fraction of the fee. I have helped several students at various stages in their college application process to be set up for success — getting all of them into their target school, or schools they were happy with.

ABOUT ME:
I've tutored on an individual basis before for a range of subjects, from Biology to Geometry to Spanish, and I have also held larger "boot camps" and had coaching for essay writing and public speaking, in particular. I founded them to give elementary through high school students an edge by teaching them certain basic techniques in communication. These camps were a bit fast-paced, though — I prefer the one-on-one format, especially so that I can give students more personalized attention, meet them where they are, and scaffold from there to help them be successful writers and readers. I've also been an editor for various publications for 5 years now, and have edited 2 books (geography bee preparation texts).

I can work with what a student is learning in school, and I can also help them get ahead with college planning and application prep. I participated in spelling, geography and vocabulary competitions growing up, so I understand the need for rigorous study in order to get an edge. Starting early helped me establish a foundation that I'm grateful to have years later. I can work with a range of ages and needs, and if you're interested in test prep, I can work with you to develop essay writing skills for those tests. If my scores matter, I have received a 2320 on the SAT (720 math, 800 critical reading, 800 writing), a 770 on the Literature SAT Subject Test, and 5's on both the AP Language and Composition and the AP Literature and

I have been writing and editing for student publications since I was 12, and have been using inDesign since then. I specialize in magazine design for print, and I use inDesign CS6. As an editor, I have had to guide people and walk them through the process of page design, so I have experience as a teacher. I can send interested students a few examples of my design for reference.

Public Speaking

I worked with young people in a youth leadership program that taught public speaking, college planning, and advocacy skills for over two years, and helped many of the young people that I worked with overcome a fear of speaking to give presentations, moderate panels, and give public comment at city, county, and state meetings. I helped young people not only craft their speeches, but also practice their delivery. I am also well-versed in online video conferencing platforms, which offer a very different experience than in-person practice and coaching. I was in also Speech and Debate throughout high school, and was a captain for two years, working with students to help them tweak and clean up their original pieces, and to help them best present it. I later concentrated the knowledge gained through writing, competing, and critiquing and held a boot camp called the Communication Camp for elementary through high school aged students. It taught skills in essay writing and public speaking, and provided a comprehensive overview of how best to posture and present oneself.

In my most recent role, I served as a mentor and college application coach, and wrote letters of recommendation for dozens of young people. I myself applied to college out of a very competitive high school, and did a lot of research. I even paid for a college application service, and all they did was look over my essays and tell me that they were good. I found those services to be overpriced, and for a student putting together their application, planning for college, or needing advice/support, a student who has been through the process can teach them how to access resources without getting swindled by the college prep industry. I think my strong background in essay writing, in particular, can help students who are looking for personal statement editing.

Solid 10 out of 10

Smitha was by far the most professional and helpful tutor I have ever worked with! As a current graduate student with learning challenges, I was concerned about finding a compatible tutor to work with; however, upon being connected with Smitha, she EXCEEDED my expectations! Her excellent communication and tutoring style were unmatched by anyone I have ever worked with. What a hidden gem in a sea of tutors! I feel incredibly lucky and grateful to have worked with her and would recommend her to anyone. Solid 10 out of 10
