About Arlene

Hello Parents and Students:

I am a dedicated Washington State Certified Counselor with a background in Elementary and Special Education. I am currently a senior substitute teacher and also tutor K-8 students, including those with Asperger's and ADD learning challenges. My experiences are rich and I always add a personal touch to my professional service to you.

Over the last 30 years, I have served as a Special Education teacher, school counselor, parent coordinator, theatrical artist, group facilitator and creative writer. I am equally at home assisting the shy student as I am the extrovert. I use many artistic tools to help "draw out" my students and motivate them to relax, while also honing their skills. Counseling can also be incorporated as part of session with my students. I am there to develop trust and openness as we work together.

My forte is in writing, reading, penmanship, organizational skills and social skills. I do, however tutor Math for children in K-6 grades. I will also come into your child's school and run a specialty group - should there be a request from a teacher, administrator or parent group. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have a Special Education background and was trained at Boston University. My focus was with children with Learning Disabilities and what was then called Educable Mentally Retarded. For two years I was a Special Education teacher in Norwich, CT, with a classroom of 12 students, ages 8-12. Currently, I tutor two students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADD/ADHD behavior. As a substitute teacher, I often visit classrooms with children who have these challenges and offer one-on-one assistance in both academics and social skills. Much of my work is in helping these students organize their work, stay on task, and allow rest time of 5 minutes between work time and time to have a gentle conversation. I also grew up with a retarded younger sister and have personal experience with compassion, sensitivity and patience on a day-to-day basis.

Handwriting

When I was nine years old I couldn't wait to learn perfect handwriting. To me, cursive writing is an artistic and carefully-crafted art form. In reality, it takes less time to hand-write than to print. I come from the "old school" here but I think it is a travesty that students have not learned this skill. I love teaching it and it tells me so much about one's personality. I use reproducible sheets and start with simple letters and then move into simple words. Then we will move into short sentence structure. By the third or fourth lesson, you will have a paragraph you can be proud of. Or, a love letter to hand to that special someone in your class!

Special Needs

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education and worked as a Special Education teacher in Connecticut before moving to Seattle. My focus has been with learning disabled and slow-learning students. I have also worked in school resource rooms as both assistant and senior substitute teacher. Each child has his/her own method of learning, tolerances, and ability to grasp curriculum, and social competency. I use a variety of techniques to engage each student in a simple yet progressive manner. I am confident that my hour with your child will be a rewarding and special one.

Study Skills

I have been working with children for the last 30 years in all aspects of learning. This includes working with students with Aspergers Syndrome, Autism Spectrum and mild learning disabilities. I help students organize their school assignments and prioritize subject study time and approach. Often I will be in contact with school teachers and support personnel so that we may all be on the same page with the student. I am a state certified counselor and my approach is mostly academic - although I also advise students on a personal basis if needed.

Writing

I am proficient in all forms of writing. All through my years in school - including college - I was praised for my free expression, composition and narrative work and poetry. I have written for two parenting magazines.
I hope to hear from you!
