About Irina

Dear students:

I am a native Russian speaker who has been in this country for over 30 years. I am fully bi-lingual, and we will be able to communicate both in Russian and in English. I have taught intensive Russian courses at the University of Washington. In tutoring Russian language skills, I employ practicing a dialog, enhancing the student's vocabulary, and suggesting various reading materials which provide an expanded view on the Russian culture, language, idiom, trivia. I also like using songs in teaching the language. I find that through music and songs a student can learn naturally, while enjoying the experience.

Since I have a background in literature, I encourage students to read fiction - this greatly improves and accelerates language learning, as a student is able to experience how the live language really works. The Internet is also a great study tool. There is access to many Russian newspapers, periodicals and blogs, through which a student learns about life in that country, along with the language that is currently used.

As a comparative literature major, I can tutor students in their literary studies. I have taught a number of literature courses to the undergraduates, and to the graduate students at the University of Washington. I have a decent library of great works of literature at home, and can help students expand and deepen their knowledge of literature written by the Russian, American, British, and Israeli authors, as well as help students interpret the works of literature and write about them.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
