About Yiming

My name is Angela. I was born in Taiwan and moved to China for my middle school and high school education, which equipped me with the ability to read and write both Traditional and Simplified Chinese characters. I have had experience with Chinese beginner, and intermediate learners. I am confident to help my students to build a stronger Chinese language ability in all aspects.

I just graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. degree in psychology. Before going into majoring in psychology, I knew I had a love of children. That is why I decided to devote most of my college years into volunteering in education related non-profit organizations. In my sophomore year, I volunteered in a children's clinic to read children's books to children in waiting room. Most of these children speak very minimum English, as a literacy advocate volunteer, I wish to make a difference in those children's lives.

In later years, I was involved in the Youth Tutoring Program organized by Catholic Community Services at King County. I provided children in low-income families with after-school academic assistance on any subject. Those tutoring sessions were on a one-on-one bases. In the process I also helped develop short term study plans to enhance children's grades in school.

Through these experiences of interacting and teaching to children, it has helped develop my passion in this direction. I have categorized several strategies I use in teaching:

1. To be absolutely patient. I have encounter a diversity of students in learning abilities. Being patient will be my best strength in assisting my students to achieve their goals.

2. Media Exposures. I believe the fastest way to pick up a language is to be in the environment. Exposing my students to appropriate media materials will be my second tool.

3. Encourage students to make mistakes. Learning and practicing a new language takes lots of courage. I have seen too many students at a proficiency level of a native speaker in reading and writing, but they lack the courage to speak the language. So, I believe being able to step outside of comfort zones and make mistakes is another important factor that goes into language learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I was born in Taiwan and moved to China for my middle school and high school education. That experience has equipped me with the ability to understand, read, speak, and write in both Traditional and Simplified Chinese characters at a native proficiency level.

In my college years, I have helped and tutored in an environment where English is a second language with questions on the Chinese subject. My proficiency in both Traditional and Simplified Chinese has been a great resource for my students to achieve greater academic success.
