About Robert

Hello everyone! I am an ESL teacher and tutor with a passion for communicating and learning, and I’m here to help you do both (and have fun while we’re at it!). I am a native English speaker and have 500+ hours of teaching time, most of which has been spent working in rural Nepal, where I co-manage a non-profit with my brother. In addition to overseeing the daily operations of our NGO, I am an ESL teacher in the government schools there, and serve as an ESL instructor for a team of Nepali medical professionals. I have experience teaching everyone from young children to adults, all of varying skill level, and will work with you to improve all aspects of your English.

I'm a big fan of field trips, because I think real-world practice, in addition to what we accomplish in the classroom, is super important. Trips to local cafes, attractions (Pike Market, Science Center, Harbor Cruises, and more!), as well as local restaurants are all an option (and don't worry, I'll cover the cost!) to get more practice with your language skills in an everyday environment.

I offer a free introductory meet and greet, because I believe that an important part of learning any language is being comfortable with your teacher and not being afraid to make mistakes around them. I live in downtown Seattle, but am able to commute to anywhere within reason to work with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I've been speaking publicly for the last 4 years, both as an educator and as a professional in the tourism and travel industry. As a member of the entertainment staff for Holland America, and later as a cruise director, I would speak in front of groups of 200+ people for several hours a day, educating them and informing them.

My role in the cruise industry also had me training new tour guides and speakers, to ensure that they were able to properly captivate and educate our audiences. It is because of my training role in a corporate environment that I believe I'm sufficiently qualified to coach people in public speaking.
