I am new to the Seattle area and WyzAnt, and am excited to start tutoring here! I know every student is different and I know it can be challenging to find effective techniques. So, when I tutor, my goal is not only to teach the subject, but also help students find the learning methods that work for them.
I have ten years of private and volunteer tutoring experience, over four years of formal teaching experience, and am certified as an ESL teacher. I enjoy teaching all ages and a wide variety of subjects, though reading and writing are my favorites. For me teaching is not only a job, but is personally rewarding leading my students to academic and personal success.
I ask for feedback often and use it to make sure the lessons are perfect for my students. Also, I will not bill you for a lesson if a student or parent is not 100 percent satisfied. Contact me and I'll set up a consultation lesson to help you or your child take the first step to seeing the improvement you've been looking for! Ashley is professional while expertly engaging a reticent high schooler. Her ability to tune in to learning styles and tailor tutoring to the student has been impressive. She quickly ascertained that my son liked rules and logic and helped him to find patterns beyond rote memory (e.g. listen to the pronunciation to determine which syllable emphasized and thus has the accent). Her enthusiasm is contagious, making lesson time a pleasure.
Appreciate your feedback!
This was a great refresher to dust off my Spanish skills. Ashley made it fun and informative. Her patience, encouragement and practical approach was well suited to my objectives and made the lesson enjoyable and motivating.
My son absolutely loves getting reading and writing lessons from Ashley. He has fun and is energized after meeting with her. She is very patient with him, providing lessons that are appropriate for where he is at. She helps encourage him to gain more confidence. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her tutoring to others.
Ashley is so great. She's always patient and gentle. My daughter is an ESL student and sometimes feels it tough and she wants to give up. Ashley kept encouraging her and came up with something that would motivate her. My daughter really loves her. She's a great tutor.
Thanks so much for the feedback!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught K-6 ESL students in Korea for the past 2.5 years. We used a content-based curriculum - thus I have experience with all the subjects. I also volunteered as a tutor for elementary students when I was in high school and university.
Each student "gets" math with a different approach. I believe it's important to explain and demonstrate concepts in multiple ways in order to find the right approach. I love math and love breaking it down and empowering students by guiding them and showing them that they CAN do math.
I received my teaching certificate through the University of Cambridge and worked in public and private institutions in Korea for five years. I teach conversation, general English, business English, and children's English (including Phonics).
I taught phonics to ESL students, integrating natural and functional language, as well to make an immersion environment. I am knowledgeable in regards to both phonetic and sight-word methodologies. I am familiar with many different phonetic approaches, including vowel-first approaches, related sound approaches, blends, digraphs, etc.
Reading is the core of learning and I believe it's key to find texts that students are interested in and then build from there. I have experience working with students of all ages and helping them increase their motivation, comprehension and enjoyment of reading.
My background in language teaching includes 5 years of international experience, an ESL teaching certificate, and passing scores on all sections (reading, writing, speaking, listening) of the national Spanish (PRAXIS) teaching exam.
In my previous position, I made individualized study plans for my students. In order to do this I researched many aspects (time frame, memorization and analysis, learning style, subject matter) and used many different kinds of study techniques, including flash cards, reading/writing application, oral explanation, etc.
