A key part of my success as an educator stems from my faith in students' inherent intelligence and creativity. As a tutor, I understand that students already have everything they need to succeed, and that my role is to help them recognize and strengthen their skills, abilities and confidence. I have successfully helped students to increase their confidence and decrease anxiety, find their own internal motivation, and develop high levels of proficiency in core skills such as writing, reading, studying and test-taking. The strong improvements that students typically see in grades and test scores are a result of this work.
I offer my students strong skills in curriculum development and lesson planning, with a particular emphasis on adapting lessons to the unique needs of each individual. I have had particular success working with students with a wide range of behavioral, developmental and academic challenges, and I am adept at creating and adapting lesson plans to respond to students' changing needs and classwork.
My background in education and training includes work in several different arenas. As an academic tutor, I work with students of all ages in the areas of writing, reading, history, test preparation and study skills. As a Prevention Educator for over eight years, I planned, coordinated and taught educational support groups focused on social-emotional skills for middle and high school students. I also developed and lead professional and community trainings on many different subjects for young people and adults.
It can take time to create new habits and establish new and more successful ways of relating to academic challenges. I often work with students over a period of time, typically 1 to 2 days per week for a minimum of two months. Throughout our work together, I help students to establish manageable goals and develop concrete plans for meeting those goals. After each session, I share a summary of the previous session, a plan for the upcoming session, and observations and encouragement on students' progress. This helps the student to track and recognize their own progress, and allows us to troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
I make every attempt to be as flexible as possible in scheduling tutoring sessions, and to meet the changing needs of students and families. I am always willing to offer make-up sessions with 24 hours cancellation notice. I am happy to meet with students in their homes (with an adult present, if the student is under 18), and/or in a public location such as a library or cafe.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have recently applied and been accepted to a MA program in English (Rhetoric and Composition) starting in the Fall of 2014. I have worked one-on-one with students at the high school and college level on persuasive writing, essay structure, research methods for English papers, and personal writing. I received a 4.0 in all college-level English classes, and scored in the 99th percentile on the Verbal section of the GRE and SAT.
During high school and college, I developed exceptional study skills that allowed me to achieve high grades in all of my subjects. When I work with students, I seek the root cause of the student's difficulties with study skills; they may be dealing with challenges around organization of materials or time management, or may need to develop different types of studying methods such as flash cards, information trees, outlines, etc. Through tutoring students on study skills, I have helped them raise their grades from failing to As and Bs.
I have tutored many different students in writing, and have successfully helped them to build and hone their skills in essay composition, sentence structure, grammar and vocabulary. By working with me, students have developed the ability to clarify and communicate their ideas in a lucid and effective manner. One student, for example, had dropped out of high school and never learned the basics of academic writing. After a year of tutoring, she developed strong writing skills, and was accepted into a four year university.
Throughout my academic career, teachers and professors in a wide variety of disciplines have commended me on the sound structure of my papers, and the fluidity and grace of my writing. I scored within the 99% percentile on the verbal sections of the SAT and GRE, and I have recently been accepted to several graduate schools in English.
