I have been a teacher for 27 years, teaching high school English, College Literature, Elementary Special Education Reading and Writing, and Middle School Language Arts for Special Education students. I am also National Board Certified with a PhD in Communications.
My three areas of focus are: Writing from grades 4-12; College Prep; and Elementary Reading for struggling students.
I specialize in writing, helping students to improve writing fluency and content, from 4th grade to high school. I have worked for the State of Washington designing and scoring the state writing assessment for 4th, 7th and 10th grades. I help students with everything from sentence construction, paragraphs to essay writing.
I have also worked extensively to help students with the essay, reading and vocabulary sections of the SAT and ACT, helping students prepare for and raise scores in the test. I also help students with college prep, preparing essays and applications for the college of their choice. So far every student I have helped has gained acceptance at the college of their choice.
In terms of early literacy, over the past 12 years, I have never had a student not advance two grade levels a year when I work with them using the University of Washington "Process Assessment of the Learner" program. This multi-sensory program involves a three step process, leading from letters and sounds, to words to books in progressive levels. This brain based program has phenomenal results.
I have 5 university degrees, in English, Education(Undergrad and Masters), Telecommunications and Film and Communications including a PhD from the University of Washington. I feel that the range of teaching I have done from elementary, middle school, high school and college help me to prepare students for all the years of their education.
I am the parent of 3, two of whom have autism. My children have been successful in school and college through focused support and are on track for good careers. I feel that I have learned a great deal through helping my children so that I can motivate and support other students with and without disabilities for a successful future. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
