About Robyn

I am an experienced teacher with my MA in education and 7 years of experience in the classroom. I am currently an intervention specialist at a Seattle elementary school and spend the majority of my time working with students who need extra support in reading (phonics, decoding, comprehension, etc) and math (computation, conceptualization).

In my time as a classroom teacher I have had the privilege to be able to enhance the standard curriculum by extending it to include a variety of experiential learning opportunities for my students. This year, my students and I have focused on the environmental impact we have in our own homes, our local community, and our global community. Our focus on three major environmental topics- waste, energy and water pollution have taken our typical math, science and humanities curriculum above and beyond what students would normally learn. Through these hands-on learning adventures, students have not only gained knowledge but also valuable experiences that deeply enriched their engagement and their understanding.

I strongly believe that part of helping students achieve their academic potential is by differentiating instruction. I believe that we all learn differently and that my job as an educator is to provide multiple modes of learning to accommodate the different learning styles of my students. By getting to know each of my students individually, I was able to find out what they enjoy, how they learn best, and what they are passionate about. This relationship with each student allowed me to tailor my curriculum, and to reach each student in a way that helped them become voracious, excited learners. During my teaching career I have been fortunate enough to be able to work closely with students with a wide range of abilities (including dyslexia, oral and written language disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and auditory and visual processing difficulties) and students who had a variety of learning styles. This experience has helped me form different perspectives on approaching student learning and enabled me to adjust my lessons and assessment accordingly to ensure that all students are given opportunities to reach their full potential and become successful and confident leaders in our society.

I have several letters of recommendation available to share with you, as well as personal references upon request.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

During my time as a classroom teacher I have had several students with an ADD/ADHD I.E.P. and was the primary teacher on their I.E.P. plans. As a result, I was in charge of making any reasonable accommodations stated in their plans, in relation to their learning disability.
