About Christian

Hello!

My name is Christian. I am a publishing poet, copywriter and editor. I have had great success teaching literacy through Americorps (grades K-5), and English as a second/foreign language in The People's Republic of China (high school, college and adult/non-traditional students). I hold a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing (Poetry), as well as a BA in English—with a writing emphasis (which translates to rhetoric, technical & professional writing, playwriting, etc.

I know how difficult some areas of learning can be. I lived in Chile, studying Spanish language and culture at a prominent university. Their program emphasized cultural and conversational immersion—which taught me many effective strategies to teach others!

I tailor individual learning strategies and curriculums to meet students’ varying literacy challenges. I develop lesson plans for beginning and moderate, to advanced classes. My hours are flexible so that students will be able to dedicate the necessary time to lessons, when their time allows. That time is valuable. Unexpected stuff happens; that's why I ask for at least four hours notice if you desire to cancel a lesson. No hard feelings!

I love the outdoors. The natural world inspires me to write, teach and to travel. I've worked for the YMCA, The Police Athletic League, Habitat for Humanity, and many other volunteer organizations. I have experience in child development, mentorship, and peer-counseling. I was Communications Officer for my college's honor society (Phi Theta Kappa) and President of the English honor society at my university (Sigma Tau Delta). I have a great deal of experience in public speaking, journalism, art history, and literary publishing.

Let's get to work!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bodybuilding

I have been adamantly participating in weight training and nutrition for 4 years. I develop progressively resistant exercise plans and calculate appropriate caloric/nutrient intake to meet my needs and the needs of those whom I counsel. This assures optimal potential on the way to acquiring personal bodybuilding and physical training goals.

Cooking

One of my past career paths included the position of prep-cook, line cook, and demo-chef.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a literacy instructor, I tutored students (K-5) in reading comprehension, language structure, spelling and writing skills. I tailored individual curriculums to meet the students’ varying literacy challenges.

I incorporated multiple learning modalities for each student, to provide them with the best opportunity for success. Through lecture, demonstration and collaboration teaching styles, followed by a "hands-off" approach–which allows the student to problem solve independently–my students take greater responsibility for learning, actualizing their role in the process.

English

I hold a Master of Creative Writing (Poetry), and a Bachelor of Arts in English, with an emphasis on technical and professional writing. I am proficient in multiple rhetorical approaches, language structure and theory, literary publishing and various styles and formats. I am able to analyze information from given text(s) of American, Modern British and World literature, and provide the appropriate strategy to respond to it critically. I have experience teaching multiple grade levels, including adult-learners, as a literacy instructor for Americorps, and a TESOL instructor in The People's Republic of China.

ESL/ESOL

In 2012, I taught English as a Foreign Language, in The People's Republic of China. My students were high school, college, and adult learners.

My curriculum was based on the needs of the two separate classes (varying levels of proficiency), and included subject matters ranging from the Fine Arts, to vocabulary, and Literature. The purpose of each class was to bolster conversational preparedness. Students were evaluated through role-playing, oratory, and written assignments.

I was formerly a student of Universidad Mayor in Santiago de Chile. I learned a great deal about Spanish culture and language, through various learning modalities that I would later employ while teaching in China.

Fitness

I played Soccer for 17 years. I routinely lift weights throughout the week. I practice proper nutrition to see the benefit of these exercises.

Grammar

I am a contributing writer and editor for a media advocacy organization, in addition to copywriting for a local newspaper. I freelance as a writer, creative content provider and editor. I have accumulated in-depth experience teaching writing and rhetoric for examinations, applications, creative content and more. Each demand proficiency in their approach, in order to best convey a clear and concise message–without losing the distinct tone of the author's voice. The practices I incorporate in my daily responsibilities to ensure success are those I can pass on to you.

Literature

Literature has always meant to be shared with one another. I believe instruction should always incorporate thought-provoking discussion. I encourage personal reading of a selected text, note-taking, reasoning and analysis. After a basic comprehension is achieved, engaging students with discussion pertaining to the elements they liked/disliked assists more greatly in language arts instruction. More importantly, the student will come to develop an overall appreciation of the work, when it is made relevant to the students' experience.

Proofreading

I freelance as a writer, creative content provider and editor. I work in various formats, examining each selection of text for clarity of theme, as well as proficiency in language structure. By analyzing the patterns inherent to the writer's voice and protecting his/her diction, the spirit of the message is preserved in continuity. The practices I incorporate in my daily responsibilities to ensure success are those I can pass on to you.

Public Speaking

I have been honored for many of my public speaking engagements throughout my extensive public speaking experience–in multiple professional and academic arenas.

I can speak with authority on the elements of successful speech writing and presentation. I encourage the development of competent (theoretical and applied) communication strategies. These include critical thinking, active listening, communication ethics, etc.

This will assist students in recognizing, and evaluating the information at hand to effectively incorporate the rhetorical approaches best suited to each topic.

Reading

As a writer, editor and graduate student, I am accustom to reading numerous texts and written contributions. I have developed strong analytical methodologies to quickly and comprehensively discern structural patterns, theme and compositional elements. I incorporate my understanding as a literacy instructor. I possess the skills necessary to supplement my students' reading skills in order to increase proficiency. My students quickly learn to identify sentence and paragraph structure, while developing stronger vocabulary.

Soccer

I played soccer for 17 years, at varying levels of organized play. I played left wing for two years, goalkeeper for just over ten years, and central defense/stopper for five years. As a goalkeeper, I maintained the highest shutout rate in my league. I am fluent in skill-drills, nutrition and training for various age groups.

Spelling

Spelling is a vital element of successful writing, in order to clearly convey your message and demonstrate a higher degree of professionalism. Spelling errors often contribute to invalidating a writer's opinion, impeding opportunity for employment and admittance to an educational institution or related program. I give my students methods to acquire spelling skills to match their vocabulary proficiency.

Study Skills

As an Americorps literacy instructor for grades K-2, I possess the skills necessary to instruct students in the best methods for productive study habits. As a Masters candidate, I a fluent in the numerous approaches to the acquisition, comprehension and retention of important information gleaned from multiple sources. I encourage engagement of the four learning modalities: visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic–for optimal impact.

Theatre

I participated in a collegiate playwriting course. The course involved writing exercises, or "etudes" and the culmination of a one-act play. Prior to opening night, the stage play was drafted multiple times during pre-production, "blocking" and dress rehearsal.
My stage play was featured at Lee University's "Fringe Fest".
I was also an actor for many of the featured plays.

Vocabulary

A strong vocabulary is fundamental to success in academic and professional fields. My instruction begins with helping the student understand why vocabulary is relevant to them. The process involves learning how to use the appropriate reference materials and study habits, as well as recognition of word structure. Vocabulary lessons don't have to be stuffy in order to develop the necessary skills to strengthen reading comprehension, writing, and conversation!

Writing

I hold a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing (Poetry) and a Bachelor of Arts in English (with an emphasis on rhetoric, and technical & professional writing). I am proficient in multiple rhetorical approaches, language structure and theory, and literary publishing. I have experience as a copywriter and editor for a Seattle-based newspaper, as well as a non-profit advocacy group. I am fluent in Associated Press style, and various other styles and formats.
