Humboldt State University (Communication)
My name is Dustin and I am new to the Seattle area and looking to be a tutor. I have experience from college working with elementary school students at an after school program twice a week. There, I tutored two children at a time, in a variety of subject areas. Some of my students needed help with reading and writing. Others had spelling and math issues. The other two students had difficulty with basic computer skills and attention issues.
Last summer I worked with high school students on communication techniques such as story telling, fact sharing and general public speaking for guests who were attending the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Over the course of the summer, I worked closely with 14 students, and by the time summer had ended, they had transformed from nervous about speaking to individuals and groups, to masters speakers.
Additionally, I work part time as a nanny and tutor for family in Bellevue, WA. On specified days, I work from 1 pm to about 7 pm. I am in charge of picking them up from the bus drop, making healthy snacks and ensuring that they start on their homework. Once that is done, we usually play or read until their parents come home from work. Hello,

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I always enjoyed history in school, both at the lower and upper levels, as well as college. I have an easy time processing historical information and then turning it and spinning it into a story for a learner to understand. My favorite aspect of American history is that of the Revolution. How 13 colonies rose up to defeat an empire is something beside itself, and because American history is so vibrant, it makes it easy to convey to a learner.
My minor degree is in Biology, and before I changed to Communication, I had taken many courses pertinent to Biology. I have knowledge of general, ocean, intertidal, invertebrate, vertebrate and plant biology that I took while in college.
I am also proficient in Punnet Squares, as well as Mendel's theory of genetics. I can tutor individuals through flashcards or word association when it comes to Biology.
My major degree is in Communication and Rhetoric. In my college courses, I took rhetorical theory, public speaking, gender communication, speech writing, nonverbal communication and rhetorical study methods. I have used those skills to write a substantial set of varying papers, and it has immensely helped my speaking level.
I was on a private swim team while growing up, and showed great proficiency for competitive swimming. My strongest stroke is the freestyle and backstroke. I am confident in the water and a very strong swimmer. I have ocean swimming experience as well.
I hold a minor in Biology from Humboldt State University. Originally in my college career I had envisioned being a zoologist or biologist. Therefore, I have many upper level zoology courses on my record, including invertebrate zoology, general zoology and other general science courses.
