About Kira

I have survived the Electrical Engineering program at the University of Washington!
Reaching a goal is incredibly satisfying, but it also takes a lot of hard work. Unfortunately, I was not able to keep up with my WyzAnt tutoring while I attended the UW. I am excited to finally be done and back here.

I earned my first 20 hours on WyzAnt in the summer of 2013, before moving to Seattle, while I finished my transfer degree at Olympic College in Bremerton. I joined WyzAnt because I had been enjoying tutoring during the prior year at the Olympic College Math and Physics Tutoring Center. Tutoring is not work, but an incredibly fun and satisfying experience which magically helps me pay my bills. I enjoy working one-on-one with students; especially when I can explain something just right and see that light bulb pop on when it finally makes sense. On top of the community college tutoring and some independent tutoring experience here, I have also been a Teaching Assistant in an Algebra class in Bremerton, and an Advanced Technical Writing class at the UW.

I am most comfortable helping students with basic math, the pre-engineering courses such as Physics, Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations, or helping with writing skills by reviewing and editing a paper. I have also picked up some coding skills as an EE major and have experience writing programs in Java, C, Verilog, Python, and MATLAB. Before deciding to take the dark path of Engineering, I completed the Business Management Program at OC. This means I also have experience with Business Math, Algebra, and Calculus, as well as other business related subjects such as Accounting, Selling, and Marketing.

I am told I have a calming demeanor, and soothing voice, which helps when you're stressing out over something that may appear to be gibberish at first glance. I have personal vendettas against negative signs and fractions, but together I think we can conquer them.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C is a bit more tricky than your average object-oriented programming language. It has a similar syntax to Java, which made it easier for me to learn, but because it is such a low-level language, dealing almost directly with memory allocation, it is also very easy to accidentally overwrite and silently corrupt something important in your computer's memory. Learning how to program in C also means learning how to use pointers, structs, and the difference between 'pass by reference' and 'pass by value'. I learned C in an Embedded programming class, Summer of 2014, where I worked with a team to build an operating system on a TI Stellaris ARM Cortex microcontroller.

Computer Programming

Google helped me to learn HTML several years ago, but my first formal programming language was Java. I have easily picked up many others since, such as MATLAB, C, C++, Verilog, Python, and Linux Bash scripting. I cannot imagine my future not involving some sort of regular programming project, whether it is part of my career or simply a hobby.

Differential Equations

I took Differential Equations in Winter 2013. The teacher was a tough grader, but I earned a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. I enjoyed the subject and the teacher so much I chose to take Diff.Eq.2 the following quarter, and received another 3.5. We studied ordinary linear differential equations of first and second order, both homogeneous and non-homogeneous, systems of first order linear differentials using Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors, Laplace transforms, and Fourier series.

Electrical Engineering

I am currently a Junior in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Washington. I transferred from Olympic College where I earned an AS in Computer and Electrical Engineering. I have experience with Java, Engineering Physics, and Electrical Circuits from the community college, as well as a full year of working in the OC Math and Physics Tutoring Center.

I have been using MATLAB since Autumn 2013, when I took a class to introduce me to the math software. Every class I have taken since then for my EE degree has involved working with MATLAB. Most of my experience with it involves signal processing, but some of my favorite projects also involved synthesizing music.

Python is a high-level, object-oriented programming language which was very easy for me to grasp since I had already been using Java and MATLAB for several years. I especially welcomed the simplicity of Python after learning C, a lower-level programming language. My Electrical Engineering capstone project involved translating the Bluetooth protocol into software-defined radio using GNU Radio, which meant writing software blocks in Python.
