I spent ten years teaching adolescents various courses in Social Studies. As a teacher, I understood that each child had to construct meaning out of their learning in their own way. Students chose topics for projects that were meaningful for them and still applied to the standards set by the state of Washington. While my endorsement was in Social Studies, students often asked me for help in a wide range of subjects. This also was true when I was a student.
When I was younger, many of my fellow students asked for help because I had a way of helping them that made sense. I found that most students just needed some help putting the pieces together once or twice. Sometimes, students would be missing one minor piece or skipping several steps and I helped them see where they needed to refocus their efforts.
My tutoring approach is fairly simple. I ask a lot of questions and work with you as you might a classmate. My goal is to help you become an independent learner with problem solving skills and a love of learning. As you grow, it is the ability to reason and come to decent conclusions that matters a great deal. It is also important to recognize the requirements of the task set before you. In these matters, I have been a solid performer as both a student and a teacher. In each role, I have always helped others find their way as well.
Having worked with a wide range of adolescents of different backgrounds, I am comfortable meeting wherever suits your needs. I want to help you realize your space for accomplishing your goals. I will help you get organized in a specially tailored way.
I have traveled through much of the United States and have traveled to Europe. I enjoy games, comedy and riding my bicycle. I speak basic German and love to travel. These experiences add to my ability to tutor because I have experienced much in my life and have much to share. I am especially interested in topics of social justice, racial parity and gender bias. This usually informs the way I teach, but also the way I approach my work as a tutor.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
