About Julia

Hello Seattle! I am originally from the East Coast, but now I teach English as a Second Language at the University of Washington and am enjoying Seattle very much! I have 12 years of part-time experience teaching and tutoring English as a Second Language, SATs, GREs, and reading and math for kids.
In high school and college, I studied music and liberal arts, played violin in prestigious youth orchestras and solo recitals, and earned good grades in classes and on standardized tests. I also worked as a one-on-one SAT tutor for 3 years during college and for the past two years, and I've had many violin students over the years, ranging in age from 5 years old to adults.
I love teaching and tutoring, because I am fascinated by how different people learn the same thing. I am very patient and I take the time to understand my clients and figure out how to help them excel.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Piano

After starting my musical education as a violin student at age 5, I added piano and music theory lessons at age 8 and continued to study both into high school. I majored in music in college and earned a BA in Music from Brandeis University. I have recently started teaching piano to a number of students, ages 6-15, so I have experience with the latest method books and teaching techniques. I like the Piano Adventures series for kids' and the Alfred's course for teens and adults.

Piano is great fun, because you can accompany yourself and sound great without having to get together with any other musicians! I find that students aged 9 or higher, who are willing to practice every day, can learn to play with two hands and enjoy playing songs they like in a few short weeks. I also teach students how to read and write music so that they can write down songs they want to learn or even compose their own music. Some of my students have begun learning on an electronic keyboard, which is a cheap way to see if you like piano, but I do recommend that after a while, students either get a piano or find one in a public place that they can practice on. I look forward to meeting more aspiring musicians, wherever they may be!
