I've been a teacher (and a student of life) for over 40 years and I still get excited when the light bulb goes off as a student is learning something new. I have taught all grades (pre-school, elementary, middle, high school, undergrad & grad) in all parts of the country in many environments (public school, private school, church school, experimental school, school-within-a-school & tutoring organizations). I really get excited teaching reading, writing, literature, social studies and science. Folks have often asked which subject or grade I like best. My truthful reply: "what I am doing right now." My favorite word is "curious." My least favorite word is "whatever." Finally, my teaching philosophy is captured by this quote by Nikos Kazantzakis (who wrote Zorba the Greek): “True teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross; then, having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create their own.”

We decided to hire a tutor for our bright preschool daughter two months before she started Kindergarten. We were concerned that she was not progressing with her letter identification and letter formation. She didn't seem interested and would give-up if she thought it was too hard. This was frustrating for us because we wanted to help her and knew she could do it if she would just try.
Wayne took time to get to know our whole family, so he could make a proper assessment of her needs. He set reasonable goals and used creative methods to slowly increase our daughters "time on task". Once he was able to get her to focus more and stay engaged, our daughter began to thrive. We are thrilled to see our daughter doing so well and best of all she now lets us help her with her learning. We will continue to work with Wayne.
Wayne is a very caring, thoughtful, and fun person who is also excellent tutor.

We will miss you Wayne! You have been so good for our daughter. I too will miss your weekly visits, you have become a dear friend to all of us.
Wayne is a very excellent tutor. My wife & I are very happy to have him tutor my daughter. Angela likes him a lot too.
Wayne has helped my son not only with math but his confidence. Hiring him was one of the best
things I have done for my son.
Our boys (6 and 10) are very reluctant writers and didn't want a tutor. It's been exciting to watch them change their tune. They look forward to their individual sessions with Dr. Wayne, and they even said it was fun!
Wayne has been so great for my son! His approach to learning is insightful and fun. My son looks forward to the sessions and is gaining the confidence he needs to take on more challenges that he use to shy away from. Even his teachers have noticed an definite improvement in his confidence and participation. Thank you Wayne!
Wayne and I met our first time for 90 minutes. We discussed several topics and zeroed in on the reading comprehension piece as our place to start. He has a lot of great experience and I'm looking forward to our next meeting where we can continue to drill into the reading comprehension topic.
Wayne is a tutor of my daughter. She really enjoyed lessons with Wayne. Wayne is a very professional and helpful teacher. Always on time, he's a funny guy too. He always well prepared lessons and gave her the best lessons possible. He also knew what level for her and focused on the area should be improved. Definitely, I recommend him to you!
My son said, "Dr. Wayne is patient and kind. His instruction is insightful. He helps me to bring out my idea on paper."
It was an excellent lesson. I got a lot of benefits. Mr. Wayne is a great teacher. He is very patient and he has a great knowledge. I will work with him again.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 10 years direct teaching experience in the elementary school classroom (public school, private school and government school) and 20 years higher education experience teaching elementary school methods courses.
As an undergraduate, I had enough credits to minor in English. As a public school teacher, I taught English at the elementary and middle school levels. As a college teacher grading countless student essays, I've often commented "I am a recovering English teacher!" English is a complicated language. However, once you learn the internal rules of usage, it becomes much easier to express yourself clearly and correctly. I'd love to help you learn these rules.
I have 10 years experience as an elementary school teacher, especially in the primary grades. My Masters degree in Elementary Education included a cognate in reading. Also, I taught initial reading (phonics, context clues, comprehension) for Sylvan Learning Center. Finally, I gave phonics instruction to Head Start parents and candidates for CDA certification.
I have taken three public speaking courses and two interpersonal effectiveness classes in college. I used specific skills of public speaking (motivation, influence, persuasion and story-telling) in my 10 years as a teacher (elementary, middle school and high school). I demonstrated speaking skills (presentations to large groups at national conferences, conducting effective communication workshops at business seminars and working with diction with new immigrants) in my 25 years as a college professor. Also, I was on the speakers bureau (as a communication resource to local businesses and government agencies) in two college towns where I taught.
As an undergraduate I had nearly enough credits for a minor in Speech Communications. I took several courses which analyzed great orators (Cicero, Churchill, Hitler, etc.) as well as investigated key parts to creating a persuasive speech. As a Masters student I took several Special Education courses in speech pathology. I learned how to help students articulate their thoughts, carefully and cogently. Finally, I have tutored several international students to prepare them for school or job interviews.
Formally, I taught Study Skills for Sylvan Learning Center. Informally, I taught study skills to ALL of my students in the 10 years I taught in public schools (elementary, middle and high school) and the 25 years I taught in higher education (including organization, time management and critical thinking). Also, I was a private tutor to a foreign student preparing to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) which demands organizational skills.
I've been playing tennis for over 40 years. I was on my high school and college tennis teams and was a tennis coach at a private school in Spokane, WA. I have a good grasp of the various skill levels and I am a very patient teacher. What I appreciate most about tennis is that it can be played at all stages of one's life. I'm glad you want to learn this elegant game.
It has taken me a while to become a clear and concise writer. There are so many grammatical rules and styles to learn. It's more common than not to become frustrated. After 25 years of teaching writing (from elementary school to the undergraduate level) and advising over 25 dissertations at the doctoral level, I have learned a trick or two on how to guide writing . . . without fears or tears. And, if you'll pardon my brashness, it can even be fun. Let me show you how.
