About Adrian

I am currently an entrepreneur and lead engineer for a company I co-founded called TOTAGO (more info at https://www.totago.co). Previously I worked as an engineer for Socrata, Inc a Seattle-based technology company. I graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.S. in Biology with College Honors. In college I did research in both computational biology and computational linguistics. I am fluent in Spanish and have lived in South America for six months and have taken advanced college-level Spanish in the U.S. and abroad.

I find teaching and tutoring in a variety of subjects to incredibly rewarding. In the past I had the opportunity to teach programming for two semesters to web design students at Garfield High School. There I developed a curriculum to teach the students JavaScript. I am especially enthusiastic about teaching programming because it is incredibly rewarding to me to see my students creatively apply their knowledge to make software. I also volunteered as a biology tutor at Garfield High School and a science tutor at Bryant Elementary School.

I enjoy teaching because it is challenging and stimulating. Every time I tutor or teach I learn something new. I believe there is no single "best" method of teaching because every student learns differently. To be an effective tutor I try to understand how the student thinks about the material at hand. When I tutor I am continuously assessing my student's knowledge and ways of thinking so I can improve my tutoring strategies.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
