About Sarah

Hi, my name is Sarah and I would love to help!

I have a Bachelors of Science in biology and a minor in anthropology from Santa Clara University. I love science as well as reading and writing and excelled at math throughout high school. I am a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and went through 150 hours of required training to attain that certification. I now work as a volunteer on my school's Emergency Medical Services squad.

When it comes to tutoring I have endless patience and a knack for making complicated subjects seem easy. I have been working as a peer tutor since I was a freshman in high school, first helping at an after school study program at a local middle school, then tutoring fellow high school students in math and French. As part of a summer-long nanny job I worked with a boy with learning disabilities on his math and reading comprehension. I have tutored 125+ hours and have an average rating of 5/5 stars for my work.

In addition to direct tutoring jobs, I have also been a full-time nanny, a house-sitter, a babysitter, and I volunteered weekly at a therapeutic riding center for people with physical and mental disabilities. I have a lot of experience working with a variety of students, of all ages and learning levels.

When I am working with students I always first determine how much they are understanding on their own and then determine where the gaps are and where improvement is needed. When we are working on a subject, my method is to not simply teach the material, but to teach the student how to arrive at that understanding on their own in the future. This allows them to continue to learn independently of my help. I am hands on with the material and favor practicing the work multiple times to let it sink in, however depending on the subject, my methods will vary.

Because of limited transportation, I can only tutor at the Santa Clara University library but if that works out for you, I have a very flexible schedule and am willing to rearrange it around your needs.

I hope to hear from you soon and I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As a biology major, this subject holds a special place in my heart. I love to tutor students in biology and my passion for the learning is contagious with my students. When working with a student studying biology, I find anecdotes and hands-on examples are most effective, especially with the natural processes that go on either in our own bodies or in nature. I have studied all types of biology and are confident in tutoring a student in any branch of the subject: ecology, evolution, biological anthropology, biology in psychology, and medical and natural science biology.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked on most subjects with students between the grades of K-6th so I have a good understanding of what gives students trouble and what has been successful in helping them. I have worked with students on understanding story and word problems which often give students trouble as they are not as straightforward as simple equations. I have extensive experience with helping students with their reading comprehension and phonics. To assist students with this I have them read out loud to me and help them with troubling words and phrases, both in pronunciation, rules of phonetics and the meanings of those words.

I am an excellent proofreader and am very thorough with my work. When reading over an assignment, I have a sharp eye for grammar, sentence structure, diction, and how the overall writing flows and communicates ideas. I have spent many years in high school correcting my fellow classmates' work and have been praised by students and teachers alike for the thorough and accurate job I have done. I am very patient and will sit down with students and work through their assignment with them, explaining why changes are necessary and helping them to improve their writing skills for the future.

Study Skills

As a tutor of a variety of ages, learning styles and difficulties, I know that each student will develop different study habits and will therefore need individualized help. As a tutor, I help promote good study skills by walking students through a topic and working in a straightforward yet effective way. Together we identify what areas give the student trouble, look at how to solve those problems and develop a study plan for the future. Good study habits can be learned at any age but I like to start as soon as possible with students, to prepare them well for work at any difficulty level. I usually send them home with a small assignment - something they can prepare for the next time I see them so that they may apply what we have worked on and put their new study plan into practice.

As a student of 5+ years in honors language arts classes, I have extensive experience with all different types of writing. I can help students with five paragraph essays, compositions, persuasive essays, short reflections, narratives, critical analyses, etc. I studied grammar and the English language through high school and college and am well prepared to assist students in all aspects of their writing. I am also a very thorough reviewer and editor of work so if you're looking for that opinion on your papers and other written work before submitting them, I would love to help.
