Hello,

My name is Tom. I am currently a full time, tenured instructor at Shoreline Community College teaching ESL. I have been teaching at Shoreline for 5 years. I primarily teach writing although I've taught a reading course and some speaking and listening courses. I have taught TOEFL prep and am familiar with the IELTS exam. I enjoy teaching very much. About two years ago, I worked as a Content Developer for an English learning website. Also, I'm a teacher and tutor with experience working with exchange students at Seattle University in the Science and Engineering program on their English and presentation skills. I finished my graduate internship at CISC (Chinese Information and Service Center) in downtown Seattle in March 2013.

I finished my undergraduate in 2009 with a B.A in English and a minor in Philosophy. I have extensive experience working with Chinese students and adults. I've taught in China twice: the first time for one year in 2009-10 and the second time for the summer of 2011 in a city called Zhangjiagang in Jiangsu province. Currently, I'm an intern at CISC in the Seattle Chinatown, a non-profit organization for Chinese immigrants to receive educational support and language training.

I've studied French in high school (3 years) and in college (4 quarters) and have a basic understanding of it. I also speak some Mandarin Chinese.

My areas of concentration are in writing, comprehension, vocabulary, and communication in English with TESOL students and adults. As an English major, I've studied persuasive writing, essay formats, argumentative writing, fiction and academic prose. In addition, I can teach first year college French or high school first and second year.

I consider myself caring, creative and willing to experiment with individual learning styles and needs. Hopefully, we can work together to achieve your goals. I also can give you advice about Seattle and the Northwest outdoors. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, running and swimming. I also like to explore the city or go to music shows.

Thanks for reading,
-Tom

I've lived in China for one year in 2009. I spent the 2011 summer in China also. I've audited Chinese 115 and 125 at Seattle University, and I currently intern at the Chinese Information and Service Center in Chinatown near downtown Seattle. I feel that my experiences working in China, auditing Chinese courses, and working with Chinese adults in Seattle has provided a solid foundation for teaching beginner Chinese.

A brilliant tutor! A considerate friend!

I really enjoyed learning from him from the bottom of my heart. He is very patient, informed, passionate, easygoing and hospitable. Applying an interactive process--we both answered the question and then talked about the arrangement of time and techniques--to our class, he virtually helped me a lot in delivering good answers and improving my speaking skills. Also, I managed to get more familiar with American culture, which I wish for long. Furthermore, whenever I arrived his home, he always offered me water and snacks. What a hospitable person! Six-hour class is just the beginning of our friendship. I hope to learn further from him in the future. How about you?
