A native Mandarin Chinese speaker, I am extremely passionate about linguistics, the worldwide web, and the great outdoors. My current work as the Chinese Community Specialist allows me to incorporate my language skills into my daily work routine, so I can continue to grow linguistically.
My tutoring experience includes teaching one-on-one, everyday English to Taiwanese working adults and instructing basic children's English to Taiwanese preschooler classes. At my work I use Mandarin Chinese to conduct monthly online meetings with my community moderators and to provide online training sessions to wiki authors. I also localize English postings and/or announcements into both Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
My tutoring style, to think of myself as a coach rather than an expert on the subject matter. I focus on the students' learning rather than trying to show off what I know about the subject. I let the students to do their own thinking and mental processing to work through the problems on their own with or without my help. In the past I found that doing too much explaining and giving students the information and/or answers tended to hinder their own ability to think or to learn.
In the past I have discovered that by continuing to ask students questions while tutoring, the questions helped students to be more likely to connect the teaching materials to their own personal experiences. They were also able to apply existing concepts to new problems and compare concepts with other concepts on their own. While some students are visual learners and some are aural with different learning styles, I try my best to match the instructions to each student's learning style.
Growing up in a biracial household, I have seen the world from both sides and have also learned to embrace and appreciate many things in life. I am always interested in learning about other cultures and I am eager to share my knowledge with people who are interested in the Chinese language. Whether you are looking to travel or just looking to acquire new language skills, I am here to facilitate your linguistic needs! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold an undergraduate degree in Music Business and a master's degree in Music Business and Entertainment Industry. Ear training was a part of my studies that I thoroughly enjoyed. I also performed with several vocal groups, and I'm currently singing with a local choral ensemble.
