Hi, my name is David. I have worked as a math tutor for several years. In fact, I began my tutoring career shortly after I graduated from college. I have also worked as an assistant teacher for two colleges in the Seattle area, and I have taught English classes online. I have held a College Reading and Learning Association - International Tutor Training Program Certification, and I have a Teaching English as a Foreign Language Certification. I really love teaching and working with students one-on-one. I think that tutoring is a very important part of the educational system. Classroom instruction often omits many important aspects of the material that students are expected to learn. A good tutor can guide a student in the right direction and save the student hours of frustration and searching online.

I specialize in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, probability, and statistics. I explain concepts in everyday language, but I also include the necessary mathematical terminology. My first, and most important, objective is to ensure that students are able to work problems and apply reasoning skills to find solutions. It is very important to me that my students do well on homework and exams. Secondly, I want to familiarize students with the language of mathematics. Often times, when teaching, students tell me, "just show me how to work the problem." I understand that knowing how to work the problem is the most important thing, and that is what I focus on.

I approach mathematics with applications in mind. I have a B.S. in physics from the University of Oklahoma, and to me, math is a vehicle for arriving at solutions to problems, which are too complex to be solved intuitively. My hope is that my students will develop a greater understanding for the many practical uses of math and gain the discipline required to succeed in their math endeavors.

I am well versed in the use of the Ti-83 Plus, the Ti-84, and the Ti-Nspire CX CAS calculators. I own two of these models. Also, I am proficient with Microsoft Excel and have some familiarity with Minitab and SPSS statistical software.

I currently work as a tutor at a local college, in addition to my private tutoring activities. I have been honored to work with so many great people all over the Seattle metropolitan area. I have worked with students enrolled in a variety of programs including nursing, psychology, social work, business, engineering, and finance. I have also worked with many high school students over the years. Tutoring is now my primary occupation and has been for almost three years. I work with people every day on a variety of science and math problems. I hope to work with you soon!

Statistics

Statistics

Statistics is my number one specialty at the college where I tutor. Because we have so few statistics tutors on staff, I spend a significant amount of time at the college working with students on statistics. I am well versed in all aspects of introductory statistics, including probability. My knowledge includes, but is not limited to: sampling methods, types of distributions, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, comparing two means, proportions, z and t statistics, linear regression, multiple regression, ANOVA, and nonparametric tests. I have probably spent more time as a private tutor working with statistics students than any other subject.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Introduction to variables, expressions and formulas. Integers and monomials. Solving linear equations and inequalities with one variable. Linear equations with two variables.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Equations with two variables, Quadratic equations, Factoring complex expressions, Exponents and polynomials
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is the language of engineering and science. The two principle components of calculus are rates of change and areas or volumes under curves. When I began my undergraduate career, I tested out of two semesters of calculus and began my freshman year in calculus III which is multivariate and vector calculus. I enjoy teaching this material, and I find that many students have a good intuitive grasp of calculus. They just need help with the details.

SAT Math,

SAT Math

SAT math involves the subjects of algebra, number and set theory, plane and coordinate geometry, trigonometry, functions, percents, and even some data analysis, probability, and sequences. I have tutored a number of students who were preparing for the SAT, ACT, and GRE. I have detailed knowledge of the subjects covered on the exam, as well as knowledge of the test format. I bring actual SAT practice problems to my test prep tutoring sessions so that students become familiar with the types of problems they will see on the test.

Great lesson!

David, thanks for another great lesson! Today we went through a practice exam, various style questions, and prepped for my final. Learned a ton! Super helpful, and David is very patient with all of the topics I am struggling with.

Efficient

Great. Was clear and knowledgeable on basic engineering statistics for my graduate course. I would definitely recommend. I also need 20 words for this review, so extra words!

Exceptional Tutor!!!!

Wow. Where do I start with this review? There were so many highlights from today’s tutoring session. He was patient and explained things very clearly, even if I asked the same question multiple times. I feel much better about my math that I was struggling with before. Would highly recommend!! Thanks David and see you next week.

Knowledgeable and patient

This was the first time I used an online tutor. I really appreciated Davids patience. David was very helpful. He was able to help my friend and I understand normal models and standardizing with z-scores! Wish we had more time!

Great session

David was a very knowledgeable and helpful tutor in difficult areas of statistics. There were no areas of the course in which he was unaware of how to complete the assignment.
