About Linda

I have a Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. in Education. I am a certified elementary (K-8) school teacher, long-time professional tutor, and family educational consultant with extensive experience in teaching/tutoring children in all levels of reading, writing, math (through geometry), and Spanish. I help students with homework, including study and organizational skills.

I specialize in and have had tremendous success with students with AD/HD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and high-functioning autism. I work with parents, students, teachers, and/or others to design and coordinate the best approach and curriculum for my students.

I use a holistic approach to identifying issues that may be impacting learning. When needed, I provide written observation and/or progress reports to help parents communicate with schools and/or family doctors regarding formal diagnosis of learning disabilities. In addition, I have been instrumental in helping parents obtain school accommodations for their children.

Helping students reach their potential is my calling. And I want to make it easy for parents, too - I go to your homes. I live in Shoreline.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a Washington State certified elementary school teacher. I have worked with students of all ages who have AD/HD and dyslexia as a classroom teacher, a professional tutor, and as a parent (i.e., my daughter had all the elements of ADHD). I worked successfully with my daughter and my students to organize their backpacks, assignments, and thoughts. I have helped them to be prepared for the next day, which made them feel confident and happy.

Algebra 1

Algebra is scary for many people. I have found that by explaining a little about why or how we use algebra helps. In addition, I let them take as long as they need to compute the problem or until they ask for my help. I often help my students memorize (or read) the steps for each type of problem...and we practice, practice, practice.

My students have actually come to enjoy doing problems. This response may be because I work the problems right along with them. When our answers differ, we do them again to figure out "who's right". Sometimes they're right! We laugh, they feel good, and they want to do another.

Aspergers

I have a Ph.D. in education and have been a classroom teacher and professional tutor for many years. As a tutor, I have worked with K-12 students with autism for a few years. I have been successful with these students because I customize my instruction to their pace and style of learning. I am extremely patient and maintain a calm demeanor, which helps the students maintain or regain their composure. I have helped parents request testing/diagnosis and accommodations from their schools.

Autism

I have a B.S. in Elementary Education and a Ph.D. in Education. I have been a classroom teacher and professional tutor for decades. Many of my students (ranging from ages 6 to 16) are autistic. The reason I'm so successful with these students is that I allow them to do their work at their pace and in their own style/approach. I wait to see if they look confused or are distracted, then I ask if they have a question. They get back on track or we review the steps of what they are working on. My gentle-but-firm approach provides boundaries without undue pressure.

Dyslexia

I am a Washington State certified elementary school teacher. I have worked with students of all ages who have dyslexia as a classroom teacher and a professional tutor. I have worked with my students to learn phonics, sight vocabulary, and sentence structure to become successful readers. With reminders and encouragement, my students become knowledgeable and confident.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a B.S. and Ph.D. in Elementary Education. I have taught K-6th grades in public and private schools, as well as worked as a professional tutor. I have extensive experience teaching/tutoring students in handwriting, phonics, spelling, reading, vocabulary building, comprehension, creative writing, math, etc. I have had great success with students with AD/HD, autism, dyslexia, and dysgraphia.

Handwriting

I am a WA State certified teacher with extensive experience in the classroom and as a professional tutor. My experience includes having taught 1st and 2nd grade students who were beginning and developing writers. In my tutoring, I have successfully implemented what I did with/for those students: I start from the beginning. I emphasize that they learn the alphabet and how to make the letters with specific instructions as to their size, straightness, and roundness using special lined paper that I have developed.

Phonics

I have a B.S. and Ph.D. in Education. I have taught beginning reading in public schools and as a professional tutor for over 30 years. I have helped non-reading children to decode new words and build extensive sight vocabulary. I help students progress at their own rate and style of learning using praise and encouragement.

Reading

I have a B.S. and Ph.D. in Education. I have experience as a K-8 classroom teacher as well as a professional tutor. I develop customized lesson plans based on my assessments and observations of my students. With their help, I find the most effective approach for each student.

Spanish

I have a B.S. in Education with a minor in Spanish education. I am a native Spanish speaker whose primary language is English so my instruction uses a bilingual approach. I have extensive materials in beginning (Spanish 1) to advanced (4th year) Spanish levels: vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension worksheets and activities. I customize my instruction to meet the student(s)' needs.

Special Needs

I have a B.S. in Elementary Education and a Ph.D. in Education. I have been a classroom teacher and professional tutor for decades. Many of my students (ranging from ages 6 to 16) have special needs.

Study Skills

I am a Washington State certified elementary teacher. I have extensive experience teaching all subjects to kindergarteners to 8th graders. I have also been a professional tutor for many years and have helped many K-12 students with study skills. When I clearly know what the homework assignments are, I can help students complete their work, and to organize themselves and their backpacks to be successful when they go to school.

Dedicated, focused, and caring, and she knows what she's doing — We were lucky and happy to find Linda. She had a difficult task working with twin 10-year-old boys, who didn't always want to work according to our schedule. Fortunately, Linda is a dedicated professional who focused on the task at hand, and worked diligently at raising their reading and writing skills to grade level. I highly recommend her to anyone looking to help their kids keep up in school. ...
