I first taught writing when I was a graduate student and Teaching Assistant at Western Washington University (1971-1973) and have been involved in writing and teaching almost continuously since then. I became a Certificated English teacher in 1986. My experience includes middle school, high school, community college, and university level courses. For the past eighteen years, I have worked full time at Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek. Each year, I have taught multiple sections of University of Washington in the High School composition courses: English 111 and 131, and Comparative Literature 240.
I am married and have a son and daughter attending local universities. I am interested in tutoring students--16 to adult--in critical/close reading and expository writing.
Over the years, I have developed my own perspective on education and my own teaching philosophy. From the beginning, I wanted a student-centered classroom, a place where students would feel welcome, respected, and challenged. As I gained experience, took professional development classes, and read education history, theory, and practice texts, I refined my approach. One of the most effective teaching methods, is one to one tutoring. All teachers are expected to spend time before and after school providing individual help to struggling students. I have always taken this responsibility seriously, and have made this an integral part of all my classes. Some of my most successful students were those who struggled at the beginning, but who met with me individually for the extra help they needed.
At the end of the 2014 school year, I retired. Although I will miss the classroom, I look forward to continuing my work with students. Peter has been working on writing and reading (interpretation) skills for our ninth grade student. He has taught with local schools and is very familiar with the material and expectations. We feel the schools do not emphasize the development of writing skills sufficiently and that it is one of the most fundamental skills a student needs to learn to be as successful as possible. The process Peter has used is focused on developing the basic skills of writing that will make school work easier and allow the student to focus on the material rather than the mechanics of writing. The level of work has been well tailored to the level required and has created a good foundation on which to build writing skills to carry through life.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
