About Jessica

I am excited to teach what I know to those anxious to learn.

I attended the University of Iowa and studied both Civil Engineering and Studio Art with a minor in Global Health Studies (2009 graduate). Outside of my studies, I got involved with Hatha Yoga and completed a 200 hour yoga teacher certification in 2009. Since then I have taught off and on at studios, parks and my home. After graduating from college, I joined the Peace Corps and worked in Peru as a Water and Sanitation Volunteer. During that time I also applied myself as a teacher of English, Art, Yoga, and Environmental topics. I taught at elementary schools in my village, high schools, and private lessons. Prior and post Peace Corps I have been able to teach yoga to different groups of people, both in studios and in parks. From my Peace Corps experience in Peru I have become fluent in Spanish - a romance language that I love to speak and enjoy to teach. Upon finished my Peace Corps assignment, I moved to Seattle where I worked in corporate civil engineering for 3.5 years.

I grew up learning and playing the piano and violin. I started in elementary school until high school using the the Suzuki Method. For violin, I went from private lessons to group orchestra where I was concert master my senior year. I enjoy playing classical music as much as fiddle music on the violin. I am available to help anywhere from beginners to moderate/advanced players.

I am happy to be of assistance and share what I know to any eager student who inquires.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

AutoCAD

I worked in a Civil Engineering firm for 3.5 years and used AutoCAD daily. I used CAD to render 2D designs. I am familiar with the commands needed to create images, set elevations, etc.

Geometry

I have a BSE in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa, 2009. I served as a Peace Corps Peru Water and Sanitation Volunteer, 2009-2011. I worked as a SvR|MIG Civil Engineer, 2012-2015, and a Project Manager for Project in Peru with IUCI, 2016. I use geometry extensively in my work.

Painting

I studied Painting at the University of Iowa and have used my skills and curiosity to continue developing works of art. I find painting a stimulating art that is as much about the end result and practicing a specific technique as it is about what the artists gains through contemplating the process of what and how they are painting. I enjoy working in acrylics, and oils, but also incorporated graphite, charcoal and colored pencils. I have worked through many styles, some being realism, abstraction, and mixed media, but I enjoy impressionism the most. More information on my paintings can be seen upon request.

Piano

I took formal piano lesson using the Suzuki Method from elementary school up until high school. There are so many skills I have gained along the way for piano that can be applied to students whether they are beginning or moderate/advanced. I have not spent much time teaching music to others, but with the experience I have it would be enjoyable to start teaching others what I know. I feel stepping into the teaching role would be fulfilling and I would easily be able to apply methods my teachers used on me for others.

Violin

I have taken private lessons on violin using the Suzuki Method from elementary and throughout high school. I spent two years learning fiddle. In high school I played in the orchestra for three years and was the concert master my senior year. Since high school I have played violin for two weddings, but largely play violin for my own pleasure. I have not had the chance to tutor students in violin, but believe I would be good at it and could apply the teaching skills my teachers used on me for others.

Yoga

I took classical ballet from elementary school up through ninth grade in high school. In college I picked up yoga which is now my choice of body art. I believe my background in ballet has strengthened my yoga practice. I am a 200 hour certified Hatha Yoga Teacher and completed my training in 2009. I have since taught at several studios, in parks, for guidance councilors at the University of Iowa and to groups of women and children in Peru. I enjoy teaching others because of how empowered and light and appreciative they are at the end of class. Yoga is about aligning, clearing, and caring for your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual self. I like sharing what I have learn about this skill and art with others to see the transformations they undergo as a result of their own practice.
