In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 12 years experience working with K-8 students in formal educational settings. In addition, I have 17 years working with preschool-6th grade students in informal educational settings. I have taught robotics, religion, art, math, science, social studies, history, grammar, writing, reading, phonics, study skills, organization, and social skills. I am currently a certified Washington State K-8 teacher with a middle school endorsement.
I have received ESL training through Eastside Literacy and taught ESL classes as a volunteer teacher. I received ESL training for educators through Eastside Literacy at both Seattle Central Community College and Pacific Lutheran University. My ESL training includes teaching English to both adults and children.
I have experience working with students with special needs, especially those with learning disabilities. I have completed coursework at the University of Washington Bothell in Special Education. I also have experience in the classroom working with students with special needs. I know everyone can learn and am willing to find what works best for each individual learner.
My UWB Washington State Teacher Certification Program studies focused on teaching effective study skills as a life long learning skill. I developed my skills as an effective study skills coach through course work and hands on training in both the Everett and Edmonds public school systems.
Extended training obtained through Steve Klein classes gives me the added edge of being able to teach the importance and implementation of environmental and mental preparedness for effective study time and test taking success.
As a high honors student I definitely have the ability to study successfully. I can teach these same skills to any age student. I have attempted and passed four very difficult state certification tests. I passed the LSAT in the top 12% in the country! Knowing how to study and teach study skills is a close second to my area expertise, language arts.
I have helped multiple graduate students earn their degree while learning to write effectively in the English language. Over 300 immigrants have benefited from the time I volunteer as an ESL and Citizenship volunteer through Eastside Literacy. The most comprehensive and impressive benefit, I believe, is watching my students earning citizenship in the USA, only because this is their desire and I have helped that dream to realization!
