About Chris

I love learning and helping students of all backgrounds and levels reach their potential.

With three years of experience teaching and mentoring, including middle/high school students and university undergraduates, I have developed a variety of approaches to meet each student’s learning style and needs. I am available for tutoring in the following areas: Essay Writing, English Literature/Language Arts, History/Social Studies, Test Prep, College Counseling, Latin, and Ancient Greek.

I hold a Masters degree from the University of Oxford in England, where I received a distinction (honors) on my dissertation, an original research project of 20,000 words. While at Oxford, I taught undergraduates and published in a graduate-run academic periodical. Professionally, I have worked as Assistant Director of Admission for a highly selective national liberal arts college, and for one of the world’s foremost multinational technology companies.

I offer in-person and online sessions, as well as (free) support over email between sessions. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I worked for four years in college admission at a selective private liberal arts college in Washington, including two years as an Admission Counselor, and two years as Assistant Director of Admission. During this time, I interviewed prospective students from around the country and evaluated thousands of undergraduate college applications. As a tutor, I build upon my college admission experience to help students write essays for their college applications and assist in their college search process.

Greek

I have an undergraduate and a masters degree in Classics, and I studied both ancient Greek and Latin intensively for these degrees. I also taught ancient Greek to undergraduates as a graduate instructor for approximately one year.
