My experience includes teaching in a special needs preschool, emotionally challenged K-3 classroom, third and sixth grades and private tutoring 3-6 grade level in math, reading and writing. I especially enjoy one-on-one instruction because it allows me to get to know the student on a more personal level and I can see the progress being made at a much faster pace than in a large classroom. I have experience designing and selecting curriculum for the special interests and needs of a student and my educational background helps me to individualize tutoring instruction so that each student is receiving instruction tailored specifically to them. I have a masters degree from Seattle University in Teaching English as a Second Language and am currently teaching adult international students at City University. My role as a tutor is to be a guide in the student's education as well as a supportive person, helping the student to reach his/her goals. I look forward to using my skills to aid the student in the subjects they have chosen to study. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My teaching experience has been as a special education teacher in a preschool; teacher in a self-contained classroom for emotionally disable K-third graders; 3rd grade teacher of all subjects; 6th grade teacher team teaching with another sixth grade teacher. Currently I am a certified teacher in Washington State.
I have one class to receive a certification in teaching ESL and have completed 9 credits of my masters degree in teaching ESL and will be attending classes to finish my masters this fall.
As an elementary teacher, I taught reading by using whole language and phonics and believe that phonics is an effective method in teaching students to read when combined with the whole language method. We also used phonics in teaching preschoolers beginning reading.
My teaching experience includes teaching in a special needs preschool where I was the lead teacher that included occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists and aides. I was responsible for writing and implementing Individual Educational Plans for each student and providing curriculum and experiences to meet the educational goals.
In a self-contained K-3 classroom I taught children who were labeled as 'emotionally disturbed' and wrote IEP's for each. I also oversaw 2 educational aides who worked with me.
