Pacific University (Japanese)
I deeply enjoy helping people and have been teaching for over 15 years, with 5 years in Japan at an English immersion kindergarten as a classroom teacher and tutor. I have taught hundreds of people how to swim and feel comfortable in the water, as well as help them improve their strokes for competitions. I have also taught students how to be good swim instructors and lifeguards. Out of the water, I have hundreds of students that can speak, read and write English and Japanese with confidence. The confidence also goes into to their math and science skills; thinking creatively and solving problems. My students' accomplishments take good communication but ample amounts of enthusiasm, encouragement and fun on my end! Every accomplished challenge or small improvement is a stepping stone to greatness!
I graduated university with a degree in Japanese and a minor in Biology. As part of my degree, I spent a year abroad in Japan. That is when I got a taste of tutoring English as a second language to children and adults. Although I had years of experience with multiple age groups, I now had a language barrier that tested my creativity to make sure I was effective. As a classroom teacher at a private Japanese kindergarten for 5 years, I helped build the curriculum of a new program that quickly grew each year. When I started, the English program had only 3 classes of 24 students each out of a school with 181 students. It was through building personal relationships with my students and their families that our program succeeded. I feel that a good reputation is built on trust and the best way to do that with young children is to keep the “lessons” appropriate to their interests and maybe a little silly. If students enjoy the lesson, they are much more likely to apply the information later and show off to parents and friends.
I believe students of all ages, and all subjects, can be successful. Everyone learns and retains information differently and I tailor each lesson to help my students improve. I have high expectations and balance that with plenty of patience and organization. Most of my experience is with pre-k to middle school students, but I am equally comfortable with all age groups. I look forward to helping your student build confidence and be successful! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Most of my teaching experience has been with children between the ages of 3 and 16. I know how to appeal to them using silliness, as necessary, to help them understand new things. I am very patient and believe that all children, especially young children can learn and master many things, even if they don't think they can.
