Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I know this material very thoroughly. Can't go wrong here.
But I know some subjects are difficult for some people and I will be attentive and work according to your needs.

Algebra 2

Duck soup! But I won't let you drown in the formulas!

Seriously, I can help you lots here.

Chess

I am a Class-A chess player and have played in tournaments. I generally open with the Latvian Gambit and play Sicilian Defense. I have read chess books (my favorite being My System by Aaron Nimzovich) and studied positions and I also have played 5-minute chess.

I approach the game as a fun, learning, and combinatoric exercise. I don't like to feel crushed when I lose or feel like a jerk when I win. I hope my student (players) will look at the game as a exercise in planning, strategy, and fortitude, as well as bravery, all in the spirit of fun and learning. I believe that playing chess will enable one to be a more careful thinker.

Discrete Math

I all but completed a BS degree in mathematics from the University of Washington when I became a writer instead. However, I keep my hand in math as a tutor because it is such a beautiful subject. I have several years of mathematical tutoring experieces and homework grading experiences. I am good at combinatorics, graph theory, finite mathematics, matrices, and linear programming. I have also studied numerical analysis and mathematical logic.

English

English is my second language and so I know it from the outside as well as from the inside, being a transplant from China at age 11 and I am now 63. I was literary chairman in high school and starting from there, I will soon have my Master's in Literary Arts. I have 2 full-length books of poetry published and my work is studied in colleges and universities. I am internationally anthologized. Literature is the love of my life. I can read, speak, and WRITE English well!

ESL/ESOL

Since I am originally from China and did not learn to speak English until age 12, only to become an international poet and award-winning author, I believe that anyone can learn a foreign language through diligence and practice. Motivation is the key.

I have more than 10 years of ESL teaching experiences. I am also bilingual in English and Chinese, and possess a smattering of Spanish.

My present occupation is writer and editor.

Literature

I have an MFA and literary theory background and I am an award-winning author with two full-length poetry books. My work has been used as instructional material in universities and colleges. I am published world-wide. I have taught writing and sponsored readings and been on AWP literary panels.

Logic

I have taken logic in philosophy as well as mathematical logic and have studied some advanced logic (Modal Logic). I have also graded papers in beginning philosophic logic. These courses I have taken at the University of Washington and from the University of London (Birbeck College) through the External Program.

Precalculus

I have studied elementary functions and math analysis since high school days and I was a tutor at the UW Seattle's Tutorial Center. Since my college days, I have kept in touch with math tutoring most recently my nephew who is at UW Bothel.

Psychology

I have studied psychology at the undergraduate and some courses at the graduate level, including abnormal, developmental, theories of personality. I have had a philosophy and science background which enables me to understand these subjects more in depth.

SAT Math

I am an experienced math tutor of the SAT. Although I did not obtain my degree in math, I was a senior in standing when I switched my major to philosophy. I graded papers for the University of Washington mathematics department and tutored there at the tutorial center. Not only am I qualified to tutor SAT math, I am also certified to tutor GRE math. I will go at your pace. I can tutor conceptually as well as giving out techniques in solving math problems.

SAT Writing

I am an award winning author and I have worked with professional writers as editor. This is your one-stop help. I will be glad to assist.

Writing

I am a professional writer with three books to my credit and my work is being studied at universities.
