About Miriam

Hello there,
my name is Miriam and I am from Germany. However, my parents are both from the Czech Republic, which is why I speak both languages. I have lived in Germany until November 2006. If you are worried about my English proficiency, don't be. I started taking English in 5th grade and speak it fluently. My major during my undergraduate studies were American Studies and Romance Studies. Currently, I am enrolled at the City University of Seattle, working on my MS in Project Management. I have not done any tutoring per se, but I have worked in customer service for many years now and have trained quite a few people, therefore I am equipped to adjust my teaching methods to individual needs.
Thank you for considering me and I look forward to meeting you. Aufwiedersehen, Naschledanou and Goodbye

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have a Bachelor's Degree in American Studies which included the study of America's culture, history, literature, and linguistics.

Czech

I was born and raised in Germany but my parents are both from the Czech Republic and most of my family still lives there today. I grew up speaking Czech and went to high school there for a quarter in 11th grade. I was also an intern at the Czech Embassy in Frankfurt, Germany in 2003. I also took three Czech related courses, that were taught in Czech, during my undergraduate studies. I speak and write Czech frequently and read Czech books. I have some Czech learning material at home, since I am currently teaching my husband to speak it and I can easily obtain more material if needed.

English

I am a German native but have studied English my entire life. I have a degree in American Studies, which includes history, linguistics, literature, culture and more. I have excellent oral and written skills and have the advantage of having learned English as a foreign language which gives me different insights into it than those who have learned it growing up.

ESL/ESOL

I started taking English in 5th grade with my first trip to the US when I was 13 years old. I was placed in an advanced English program with 3 additional hours of English classes each week as well as History and Philosophy classes taught in English. I traveled the US every summer during my high school years, I worked at an Irish Pub and traveled to Ireland, and I have a BA in American Studies. I have lived in the US permanently for 6 years now and I passed my TOEFL test with 118/120 before moving here in 2006.

German

I was born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany and lived there until I was 23 years old. I attended Kindergarten, Elementary school, Junior and High school in Germany and one of my three 'majors' in High school was German literature. My 3 hour final exam was about Faust I and II by Goethe which I passed with an A.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I worked in corporate training for 7 years and had to create PowerPoint presentations on a daily basis, from presentations used to provide an at-a-glance update for the VP over informational presentations to 2 hour training sessions.

Microsoft Word

I worked in the corporate environment for 7 years where I had to use Word on a daily basis, creating a variety of documents at fast pace with no errors. I also used word to write all of my assignments for my Master's degree.

TOEFL

Being an immigrant myself, I passed the TOEFL with 119 out of 120 possible points. I have lived in the US for 8 years now and have a fantastic grasp of the English language. I studied English in school for 9 years, with many different subjects being taught in English and also have a degree in American Studies which covers American history, linguistics, culture, and more.

Writing

I have been writing my entire life, in German and in English. As a child I was already writing poems and short stories. This passion continued into my teenage years and into adulthood. I am a published children's book author (Schmitty the Kitty and Felix Puppylix - Mommy's and Daddy's Little Helpers), I write blog posts once or twice a week, and I read a lot. I have written essays about any topic you can imagine during my years of formal education. From discussing the use of gender in Quebecois French to interpreting Van Gogh's 'The Church of Auvers' to analyzing the symbolism of nature in Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'The Scarlet Letter' to exploring the systemic nature of project management. I am very creative and I can write about anything. I also have excellent skills in discovering and interpreting the meaning of the work of other authors.
