About Madeline

I recently graduated from Northwestern University in 2016 with a B.A. in Chemistry and a concentration in Organic Chemistry with Departmental Honors. During college I tutored fellow college students in general chemistry and organic chemistry for 3 of my 4 years. I love science, especially chemistry, and enjoy tutoring because I love to help students gain a solid understanding of scientific concepts and then show them how those concepts can be applied in everyday life and scientific research. At Northwestern I was a tutor hired on behalf of the chemistry department to aid general chemistry students. I was also an instructor for weekly tutorial workshops for students in general chemistry and organic chemistry. In addition, I took many upper-level mathematics classes in college which required an extensive and in-depth understanding of algebra and geometry (as well as pre-calculus and calculus), and thus I am extremely comfortable tutoring students in all levels of algebra and geometry.

I find tutoring rewarding and pride myself in being prepared for every tutoring session - knowing what the student is struggling with beforehand allows me to prepare materials that can help us work through concepts together together. While big subjects like thermodynamics, balancing chemical equations, or complex polynomial equations can seem daunting at first, I start with the basics of what students need to understand the fundamental concepts and work from there, so students end up with a solid understanding of the subjects from the bottom up. I have found that students benefit the most from first being presented with an explanation of challenging concepts and reviewing background concepts, then working through a few practice problems using the strategy we discussed, and finally by practicing their newly learned concepts and problem-solving strategies at home.

I tutor students in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Algebra and Geometry. I tutor students in algebra and geometry in middle school and high school, and tutor students in General and Organic Chemistry at any age, including adults looking to continue their education. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to schedule a session! I would love to answer any questions you may have about my tutoring services and I work with students and parents to find session times that fit both the student's and my own availabilities.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have a B.A. in Chemistry from Northwestern University-Departmental Honors, Concentration in Organic Chemistry.

Organic Chemistry

My degree is a B.A. in Chemistry, and my concentration was in Organic Chemistry. I have taken a year of organic chemistry as well as a year of advanced laboratory classes, and multiple graduate-level courses including one on Mechanostereochemistry and one on Chemical Biology. I also wrote a senior thesis on the synthesis and conformational changes in chiral amines. In addition, I have 2 years of hands-on lab experience synthesizing, purifying and analyzing organic compounds. My knowledge of this subject is extensive enough to tutor any individual in organic chemistry up to and including university level, and I have years of experience tutoring college students in organic chemistry.
