About Rodney

Hello Students and Families.

I am please to present my expertise to you and hopefully prove myself to be a worthy tutor to you. I will do my very best to give you
the best of the training and the benefit of all of the experience that I have.

My areas of expertise are as follows: I have 7 years of professional experience working as an educator. I have proudly taught middle school
at all levels 6th grade to 8th grade. I also have 4 years of experience teaching adult learners at North Seattle College. Over the past 3 years I
have been a part of the mathematics curriculum team in my district. Our main objective, as a team, was to unpack, decipher, and present the
mathematics standards as presented by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). I am very experienced with the standards and not only have I taught
the standards for two years now, I was responsible for creating professional development opportunities for the entire math team. I am very proud
of this experience because the CCSS were challenging at all levels. In addition, 9th grade standards based on the common core, filtered down
to 8th grade while some 8th grade units went to 7th grade etc.

While working at North Seattle College, I was an adjunct professor responsible for teaching courses that were considered below college level. Students
ranged from 18 to my oldest 78 years of age. Many of my students had not been in a mathematics classroom in sometimes 20 years or more. My ability
to differentiate was key and I did that precision.

I consider myself to an expert in teaching the following content: CCSS Math 6, Math 7, Math 8, with the majority of the content being Pre-Algebra and Algebra. I am
also and expert teaching Geometry, Statistics, to a certain level, Probability, Pre-Calculus, Trignometry, and Calculus.

I hope that you find my profile and experience helpful. I can't wait to work with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I currently teach 8th grade math in Renton, WA and have been a teacher in the district for 6 years. I have 4 years experience teaching Algebra at North Seattle College in Seattle.
I am experienced with the Common Core State Standards.

Common Core

As a certificated teacher in the State of Washington, I am qualified to teach mathematics aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The Renton School District has completed its 5-year transition period to the CCSS. During this transition period period, not only did I participate in several professional development opportunities required by the district, I also participating on the team that was responsible for unpacking and aligning the former Washington State Standards to the CCSS. Lastly, I currently participating in the last year of a 3-year, full classroom CCSS immersion pilot program happening in selected schools in our district. I have been teaching the full range of the CCSS and the Standards of Mathematical Practice.

General Computer

I have been working with computer hardware and software since 1991. At the beginning of my career I was a member of a computer hardware and software transition/training team for the University of Washington. My primary responsibility was to replace all DOS based computers at the university with the new state of the art personal pc systems with Microsoft products loaded. The university was the first major public institution to fully transition to personal pcs with Microsoft products. I was also responsible for training teams of employees on how to run and use the new software. At this time, the average American did not even know how to operate a mouse! I served on this team for the next 5 years.

Microsoft Outlook

I use Microsoft Office products daily. I completed professional development through "Atomic Learning" as part of a district requirement.

Microsoft Publisher

I use Microsoft Office products daily. I completed professional development through "Atomic Learning" as part of a district requirement. I use the program to create classroom newsletters, event programs, and on some occasions, I create practice worksheets for my students.

Microsoft Windows

I have worked with a Windows environment from its inception. I was part of a team of information technology professionals that trained University of Washington employees to use the new operating system. This training took place during the University's system wide transition from DOS to Windows.

Public Speaking

I completed official university courses in public speaking and speech writing. As part of my daily practice, I am often called upon to present information to district officials and to my peers. I participate in a professional learning community where I am often required to present information on curriculum, grading techniques, and I speak often on best practices in teaching.
