About Thomas

An experienced professional writer since 2008, I know how to effectively communicate in a variety of arenas. I'm a trained technical writer, but I'm also a published poet. Throughout my career I've thoroughly enjoyed empowering people with an appreciation for language and skills that will help them lead richer, more connected lives. My greatest strengths are in literature, creative writing and technical writing. I'm well versed in Associated Press, MLA, and Chicago Styles, with some familiarity with APA style. I have some undergraduate training in historical research. I also tutor Mandarin Chinese at the first year level for non-native speakers.

I have about a year of experience tutoring professionally, mostly with working adults and young adults. I come from a long line of teachers on both sides. I also taught for two years full time as a representative of my church.

Above all, I bring compassion to my work. I have a learning disability which makes me gifted in some areas, but very slow in others. This disconnect made my educational journey a long and difficult one. I understand the thrill of success, but also the despair and discouragement that comes with failure. I know how hard it can be to play the game of getting through school. I also know how to help my students make the most of it. I listen carefully to my students' concerns and tailor my approach to each individual.

My time is quite flexible, with only a 12 hour cancellation policy. I respect my students' time and only ask that they do the same for me. If that happens on both ends, we should get along fine.

I have access to private rooms that are safe, quiet environments to work in, but I do need at least 24 hours to arrange it. I'm willing to travel as far as 30 miles to meet with students, but again, please allow some lead time.

I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

In the course of my education I took particular interest in history generally, and American History in particular. I consistently got A and B grades in American History classes and am well familiar with library and references resources for historians and students alike. I also worked as an intern editing and researching a historical diary to prepare it for publication.

English

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English/Creative Writing from the University of Washington in Seattle. I've been tutoring for this subject since 2011.

ESL/ESOL

I have been tutoring since 2011, and approximately 90% of my students have English as a second language. I have experience using intermediate level ESL curriculum with students and am well familiar with the topics most useful for students at that level.

Literature

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of Washington in Seattle. I'm most familiar with American and British literature, though I do have some contact with world texts in translation. My experience extends to both prose and poetry, and I'm well versed on critical approaches to literature as well as conventions of MLA style and criticism. My personal critical inclinations are towards the reader-response school. This approach emphasizes the interaction between a text and the reader, though I have familiarity with several other approaches, including Deconstructionism, Marxism, and others.

Proofreading

About 30% of my tutoring work has involved systematic proofreading and editing. I'm well familiar with rules and style considerations for punctuation, grammar, capitalization, and formatting. As a professional writer and editor, I have proofread documents as short as a brief letter to a thesis that was over 50 pages long.

Study Skills

I struggled throughout my student life. While I have a very high verbal IQ score, my nonverbal scores are extremely low--evidence of what's called non-verbal learning disability, or NLD. As a result, I became skilled at study techniques including advanced mnemonics and detailed note-taking. I am also very familiar with how logistical considerations, such as transportation, study space, and scheduling can have a big impact on student success. I have the experience and skills to help students at every level get organized and achieve the success they're looking for.

Vocabulary

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of Washington. I've had friends call me a walking thesaurus. As a poet, I'm intimately familiar with the subtle meanings and tonal applications of thousands of English words. I'm skilled in memorization techniques and other tools to help students learn and retain new vocabulary words, from ESL level on up to those earning advanced degrees.

World History

In the course of my education, I took a particular interest in history. I not only took basic World History classes and did well in them, but I went on to take several classes in the history of East Asia.

Writing

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English/Creative Writing from the University of Washington. I have been working as a professional copy writer and editor since 2008. My poems have appeared in paid publications, both online and in print. I have extensive training and experience in both technical and creative writing.
